‘WEIRD SENSATION FEELS GOOD: The World of ASMR’ Is a Multi-Sensory Exploration

James Taylor-Foster Curates an Engrossing World: Exploring the Fascinating Realm of Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR)

This exhibit offers a comprehensive, multi-sensory journey into the intriguing phenomenon known as ASMR. Developed in partnership with Sweden’s National Centre for Architecture and Design, ArkDes, and the Design Museum in London, this expansive display delves into the emotional impact of ASMR on its audience.

Simply put, ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Responses) refers to a specific feeling of intense relaxation and happiness that people experience, often described as a tingling sensation in the body. With countless videos on the internet garnering billions of views, this cultural trend has transformed into a worldwide phenomenon with deep roots in compassion, understanding, and self-care. At Hong Kong’s new AIRSIDE exhibition, local artists AK Kan and Kin Lam present unique works showcasing the city’s distinctive auditory character. The exhibit includes an interactive section where visitors can create their personal ASMR pieces using common items. In a special area dedicated to Hong Kong, the installation replicates the atmosphere of its public transportation system, providing close-up listening experiences of local soundscapes.

In another section of the display, guests have the chance to step into the “ASMR Room,” an area filled with various audio-visual works on ASMR both inside and surrounding the space made out of plush woven cushions. Additionally, there’s a special room devoted to television personality Bob Ross, often referred to as the “Father of ASMR.” His three original paintings and episodes from his famous The Joy of Painting show are showcased here. This ASMR exhibition explores fresh forms of community and closeness around topics like solitude and detachment, elevating ASMR from a cultural trend to an innovative creative domain. The exhibit continues until July 13, 2025.
