‘Weapons’: Josh Brolin Horror Movie Promises More Weirdness Than Barbarian

Filmmaker Zach Cregger, known for his chilling productions, hinted at the distinct aspects of his critically-acclaimed 2022 movie versus his upcoming horror mystery film. Not only does he helm this new project, but Cregger is also penning the script and producing it as well.

In a recent conversation, Cregger assured fans of “Barbarian” that the creation of “Weapons” was driven by a deeply personal motivation. He described the movie as entertaining, humorous, and terrifying, but not grim or depressing. Despite its light-hearted tone, the story it tells is quite disturbing. Cregger explained that “Weapons” is a creatively daring project, larger and stranger than “Barbarian.” He went on to say that it was his reflection of the world around him. This work, he stated, is more about exploring his own personal issues rather than just creating another horror movie. Essentially, “Weapons” represents Cregger delving into himself and working through his own problems.

As a movie enthusiast, I’m excited to share my anticipation for the upcoming horror epic, “Weapons.” Originally billed as an intricately connected, multi-layered tale, this chilling venture will star Julia Garner as Justine Gandy, Josh Brolin as Archer Graff, Alden Ehrenreich as Paul, Benedict Wong as Andrew, Amy Madigan, Austin Abrams as Anthony, June Diane Raphael as Gladys, Cary Christopher as Alex Lilly, Toby Huss as Captain Ed, and many more.

In addition to director Gregger, “Weapons” is also produced by Roy Lee, Miri Yoon, Raphael Margules, and J.D. Lifshitz. Notably, Josh Brolin, Richard Brener, and Michelle Morrissey serve as executive producers. In a fierce competition among numerous major studios and streaming platforms in 2023, we managed to secure this gripping story for the big screen.

The official summary for the movie Weapons states that “when every child from one school class mysteriously vanishes simultaneously at midnight, the town is left wondering who or what could be responsible for their sudden disappearances.” Garner’s character is an elementary school teacher whose students all vanished overnight. This has left everyone in the community uneasy and suspicious of her possible role in the children’s mysterious disappearance since she was the only adult present when they went missing.

What’s Next for Zach Cregger?

Currently, Cregger is simultaneously working on the upcoming release of the film “Weapons” and creating his next significant horror production – a fresh live-action adaptation of the popular franchise, Resident Evil. According to earlier news, Sony Pictures is said to be involved in writing, directing, and producing this Resident Evil reboot. Although specifics about the movie’s storyline and characters remain confidential, there have been rumors that a star from Euphoria has been cast for the main role. Abrams, who has experience with zombie themes following his performance in The Walking Dead Season 2, is believed to be involved.

Weapons premieres on Aug. 8, 2025.
