Weapons Director Gives Exciting Update on Aunt Gladys Prequel

So, I was listening to a podcast, and Zach Cregger, the guy who did the weapons for that awesome horror movie, was talking about what’s next for that whole universe he’s building. He gave a little hint about a potential prequel focusing on Aunt Gladys! He said they’re still talking about it and figuring out where it fits into everything he’s already created, and how it would tie into his other work. It sounds like they’re really thinking about how it all connects, which is cool.

What did Zach Cregger say about the Aunt Gladys prequel?

Zach Cregger shared on the Deadline Crew Call podcast that the prequel story focusing on Aunt Gladys is still being developed and is something he’s continuing to work on.

As a fan, I’m really glad to hear the spin-off will still feel connected to Amy Madigan’s world – that’s a big part of what I loved! Cregger mentioned they’re still working out the details and haven’t started filming yet, but he did say he’s super excited about the story they’re developing, which definitely has me hyped!

In the same interview, Cregger called his film Weapons “a very personal movie,” noting it was autobiographical in many respects. He specifically shared that the final section of the film, focusing on the character Alex, draws heavily from his own childhood experiences with addiction within his family.

Cregger shared that he personally understands the feeling of a loved one changing drastically due to an outside influence, and the difficulty of pretending everything is normal while dealing with a frightening home life. He explained that he began writing ‘Weapons’ after the unexpected loss of a close friend during the making of ‘Barbarian’.

The director shared stories about making Barbarian with a limited $4.5 million budget, describing it as a very chaotic process. He said the funding actually came together just in time, and the stress of it all made him feel much older. He also talked about quickly finding actors after the strikes ended, and how thrilled he was to get Amy Madigan to play Gladys. Finally, he revealed he’s working on a Resident Evil film, despite never having watched any of the previous movies.

The movie Weapons cost $38 million to produce, but earned over $268 million worldwide.
