We Were Liars’ Shocking Twist Leaves Viewers in Tears: A Heart-Wrenching Finale

⚠️ Caution! Substantial spoilers lie ahead for the ‘We Were Liars’ novel and TV series, available on Amazon Prime Video. Proceed with caution if you wish to avoid knowing the major plot twist.

Since E. Lockhart published “We Were Liars” in 2014, it has been a favorite among young adult readers. Now, we’re getting to witness the Sinclairs’ story unfold on screen as the book is adapted. Regardless of whether you read the book first or went straight to the series, it appears that both groups share a common sentiment – no one is ready for the shocking twist ending in “We Were Liars”, and those discovering for the first time what happened to Cadence during Summer 16 are experiencing quite intense reactions.

If you prefer not to learn something prematurely, it’s best to turn away now. The series “We Were Liars” revolves around 17-year-old Cadence (Emily Alyn Lind) who returns to her family’s island a year after incurring a head injury and seeks assistance from her cousins Mirren (Esther McGregor) and Johnny (Joseph Zada), as well as friend Gat (Shubham Maheshwari) to help her remember. All eight episodes were simultaneously added to the 2025 TV schedule, and it appears that some who started watching for a delightful summer binge were taken aback by what followed: they didn’t anticipate the events that unfolded.

In the climactic episode of the teen mystery, Cadence recalls that the Liars (their group’s chilling alias) had torched their grandfather’s house. Shockingly, she was the sole survivor. While it may not be a horror film as suggested, it certainly evoked a sense of terror. On platform X, viewers shared similar feelings of dread and shock.

Without a doubt, the E. Lockhart novel and its adaptation can spark lively discussions about which one was superior. Regardless, they both did an outstanding job of maintaining the suspense surrounding the twist until the very end. Despite knowing the outcome this time, I must admit that the climax still packed quite a punch, particularly those unexpected moments:

As a devoted cinephile, it’s left me feeling quite disgruntled by this TikToker. Their statement, “4 of them died, but only 3 stopped breathing,” feels like an unnecessary attempt to elicit tears during my busy work hours. Why must such emotional turmoil be inflicted upon me at inopportune times?

In a different TikTok post, people who had watched the Prime Video series were emotionally connecting with each other through their comments as they shared feelings related to trauma.

  • The way I ugly cried. It destroyed me. DESTROYED 😭 – L Pearce
  • I thought it was a cute little mysterious summer show I was wrong 😔🔫 – Madison b
  • Yep. Just finished it. And I’m a wreck…. – SunflowrMelly
  • THE WAY MY MOUTH DROPPED AND I INSTANTLY STARTED CRYING – Stmxo
  • “What’s your favorite horror movie?” – piper!

It’s indisputable that the TV adaptation of “We Were Liars” was a gripping spectacle. Reading the book beforehand didn’t lessen the emotional impact; instead, it played out like a drama unfolding on my screen, and I can empathize with those expressing their distress over the fate of the Liars.

If you haven’t had a chance to read “We Were Liars” personally or wish to revisit the enigma, you can now stream the entire 8-episode series adaptation instantly on Amazon Prime Video.
