We Live in Time director explains unexpected Weetabix reference
As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of movie-watching under my belt, I can confidently say that “We Live in Time” is a cinematic delight that strikes all the right chords. The chemistry between Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh is nothing short of electrifying, and their performances are nothing less than stellar.
Living in Time” has the power to move you to tears, bring on laughter, and underscore the exceptional talents of Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh.
As a gamer, I’ve learned to anticipate the unexpected twists and turns. However, even I was taken aback when I found out that this game, which seemed like a typical romantic comedy-drama, incorporated Weetabix as well!
In a fun twist, Tobias, one of Garfield’s characters, serves as a spokesperson for Weetabix. This role has earned him the affectionate moniker “Mr. Weetabix” from Almut (Pugh). Through his efforts, the beloved breakfast cereal finally gets its time to shine in the spotlight on the big screen.
Director John Crowley stated, “It doesn’t seem to have a prominent presence in the film industry, does it? That appears to be the intention,” when discussing the Weetabix mention with Digital Spy.
Nine years ago, I staged a play written by Nick [Payne] at the Donmar Warehouse. I appreciate that distinctive aspect in his writing – it’s like ordinary poetry. Moreover, he excels at weaving comedy into his works without compromising the authenticity of the characters’ connections to it.
In our work, we aimed to portray both the unique character of Mr. Weetabix and a particular version of London as depicted in the script, which seemed different from other cinematic depictions of London. This aspect played a significant role in our efforts.
“It just felt quite real and contemporary to me in a way that was exciting.”
Apart from the mention of Weetabix, another key point you’ll find intriguing in “We Live in Time” is the brilliant casting choice of Garfield and Pugh together.
From the outset of rehearsals, Crowley had a strong faith in their connection, as even when they tried to keep their performances subdued, he noticed that they would become emotionally invested in the material nonetheless.
The situation was similar to learning a map instead of scaling the mountain, but they eagerly embraced it since they were highly skilled and preferred not to squander any resources during actual filming in front of the camera. That’s how he remembered it.
However, during the second day’s rehearsals, there were instances where they seemed to grow more at ease with one another. These occasions led the performance of the scenes to feel as if it was drawing them effortlessly into a deeply emotional space.
You’d notice they acted just like restless racehorses, eagerly pawing at their enclosures, yearning to race. Occasionally, brief sparks would fly between them, creating an electrifying and exhilarating atmosphere.
UK viewers won’t have to wait much longer to see that chemistry unfold on the big screen, as the movie “We Live in Time” is set to premiere in cinemas on New Year’s Day.
We Live in Time is released in UK cinemas on January 1, 2025.
