We finally got our first look at Leigh Whannell's Wolf Man

As a horror aficionado with a penchant for classic monsters and a soft spot for Leigh Whannell’s directorial prowess, I must say that the first official teaser of Universal’s reboot of the 1941 Wolf Man has sent chills down my spine. It’s been an agonizing wait, but it seems our patience was well rewarded.

It seemed like Leigh Whannell’s new version of “The Wolf Man,” a remake of the 1941 movie, might never come to life, but luckily, Universal put those concerns to rest on September 6 by releasing the first official trailer for the film. As of now, “The Wolf Man” is scheduled to debut in January 2025.

Making an effective teaser for a werewolf movie can be tricky nowadays, but “Wolf Man” certainly pulls it off. Frankly, I often question if it’s possible to scare audiences with werewolves in today’s world, but if there’s anyone up for the challenge, it’s Whannell. This will mark his second time working on a monster from Universal’s classic library. Earlier, he helmed “The Invisible Man” featuring Elisabeth Moss, which I personally found to be exceptional, so naturally, I’m eager to see what he brings to this project as well.

It’s possible that Universal decided to reveal the teaser trailer now because there were leaked clips over the weekend from Halloween Horror Nights showing someone in a wolf man costume promoting the movie. The reaction to this costume was not positive. However, I don’t believe that the leaked clip accurately represents how the monster will look on screen. Regardless, it seems strategic for Universal to release an authentic and ominous teaser trailer.

In the video clip you’ll find above, “Wolf Man” portrays a family battling to remain secure from a menacing creature lurking in the forest. Interestingly enough, it seems that the very predator they are pursuing is none other than the family’s father, Blake, skillfully played by Christopher Abbott. In an effort to safeguard their child, Charlotte (Julia Garner) takes whatever measures necessary.

Apart from directing the movie, Whannell also collaborated on its story with Corbett Tuck, and worked together with Tuck, Lauren Schuker Blum, and Rebecca Angelo on the script. With a teaser and a new poster finalized, we’re expecting the full trailer release within the upcoming month, possibly around Halloween.

The poster is great. Love the way the kid’s fingers form a “W,” simple yet effective.

This fall, Garner also has another horror movie set to release. She stars in the prequel to “Rosemary’s Baby,” titled “Apartment 7A,” which will debut on Paramount+ in September. Regarding the werewolf theme, I think “Wolf Man” could pair nicely with “Nightbitch.

Wolf Man starts playing in theaters on January 25, 2025.
