WB Reveals 4 Major Superheroes Leading James Gunn’s New DC Universe!

Warner Bros (WB) has definitively decided on the four principal superheroes that will play significant roles in James Gunn’s new DC Universe. This Universe is still in its initial phase, starting at the end of 2024 with “Creature Commandos” on Max, but it won’t be long before the main DC characters step into the limelight.

During a Q1 Earnings Call led by WB, CEO David Zaslav identified four superheroes as the foundation for DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn’s reboot franchise. Over the next decade, according to the studio’s strategy for the DC Universe, these characters will be crucial, serving as the backbone upon which the rest of the universe will be developed.

The 4 Biggest DC Superheroes in James Gunn’s DCU Reboot

As a movie enthusiast, I’d like to share some exciting news about the future of DC’s cinematic universe. According to producer Zaslav, James Gunn and Peter Safran have identified four key superheroes that they are actively developing under their ten-year plan. These characters serve as our studio’s major assets and game changers, setting us apart in this new era:

Stay tuned for more updates on these fascinating projects!

Superman

It comes as no shock that Superman is set to play a significant role among the four main heroes who will form the foundation of James Gunn’s DC Universe. Known as one of the most iconic superheroes in comic book lore, the Man of Steel has long been a key figure in DC narratives, whether on the big screen or in other storytelling formats, and this trend is expected to continue.

In the tall, impressive figure and remarkable abilities of newcomer David Corenswet lies the task of bringing Superman to the big screen on July 11, signifying the inaugural big-screen movie in his fresh DCU. Surrounded by a strong ensemble cast, Corenswet assumes a considerable burden as he takes center stage in an entire cinematic universe.

Initial reactions towards “Superman” have fueled optimism among fans, implying high anticipation for this film to launch the DC Universe with an explosive start. Given Corenswet’s role as the Metropolis hero, there is expectation that his character will serve as a pivotal figure within the universe due to Clark Kent’s extraordinary abilities and moral principles.

Batman

Despite Superman being highly adored by DC fans, Batman, Gotham City’s renowned protector, isn’t far behind (almost neck-and-neck). Bruce Wayne is recognized not only for his thriving business empire within DC but also for his reputation as one of the universe’s toughest fighters.

Today, Batman’s abilities are legendary, earning him acclaim for his formidable combat skills, high-tech arsenal, and terrifying presence in battle. Though he typically adheres to a “no killing” rule, the Caped Crusader can strike fear into anyone thanks to his intimidating reputation as a crime fighter.

Although it’s uncertain when casting for DCU’s Batman will occur, he is undeniably a key figure in the franchise, especially once the Justice League assembles. Moreover, he will headline “The Brave and the Bold” with Damian Wayne, though production on this project remains in its initial stages.

Wonder Woman

Among the timeless trio of DC superheroes, we find Diana Prince’s Wonder Woman, the Princess from Themyscira, one of DC Comics’ strongest and most recognizable heroines. Often seen as near-divine, she possesses abilities such as superhuman strength, speed, flight, control over lightning, energy projection, and many more, making her a formidable adversary for almost any foe.

Besides being renowned for her heroic deeds, Wonder Woman is equally famous for her extensive arsenal of weaponry, most notably the Lasso of Truth. This lasso has a unique ability: anyone ensnared by it must truthfully answer any question posed by Wonder Woman. But that’s not all – she can also use the Lasso to fling people far distances or inflict significant physical harm, further solidifying her reputation as a formidable warrior.

After Gal Gadot’s performance as Diana Prince in the previous DC Extended Universe, it has been decided to recast the character with a new actress yet to be named. The chosen actress will have the opportunity to delve deeper into the heroine’s escapades than fans have previously witnessed.

Supergirl

In the new DC Universe, David Zaslav has highlighted Kara Zor-El, better known as Supergirl, as a key foundation stone. Known as Clark Kent’s cousin in DC Comics, this heroine hasn’t had many chances to shine on the big screen previously. However, that’s about to change rapidly now that the DCU is underway.

In terms of power, Supergirl shares numerous similarities with Superman, as she possesses capabilities such as flight, superhuman strength, incredible speed, heat vision, and freeze breath, among others. Given that Corenswet’s portrayal of Superman has already demonstrated the use of heat vision and freeze breath, it is anticipated that Kara Zor-El will exhibit these same powers when she makes her appearance.

In June 26, 2026, Milly Alcock, star of “House of the Dragon,” will make her debut in the DCU’s second theatrical movie titled “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.” There are whispers that she might also appear in a cameo role in the 2025 film “Superman.” Regardless, when she arrives, it won’t be long before we understand why she is such an integral part of this larger universe.
