In the initial teaser for the movie, viewers catch a sneak peek at the mythical creature known as the Orang Ikan, which is rooted in Malay folklore and draws influence from the 1954 film “Creature from the Black Lagoon.

According to the preview, the intensity builds up as the main characters struggle for their lives on the isolated island. Early responses scattered throughout the trailer suggest that the movie is “extremely scary,” as stated by Dread Central.

In a different phrasing, Asian Movie Pulse praises Woodhouse’s performance as outstanding, whereas RogerEbert.com describes Monster Island as an enjoyable cinema experience.

In my gaming world, I’m excited to share that the movie I’m talking about was crafted by none other than Mike Wiluan. This talented director has a rich history, having previously been the producer behind blockbusters like “Crazy Rich Asians” and “The Night Comes For Us”.

On a desolate island, a Japanese vessel carrying prisoners for forced labor in occupied territories is struck by allied torpedoes. A Japanese soldier and a British prisoner of war find themselves stranded, only to realize they are being pursued by the terrifying Orang Ikan, a legendary sea monster from local folklore.

Regardless of their contrasts, both the soldier and the prisoner of war understand that cooperation is essential for them to endure the unfamiliar challenges they face together.

Discussing the movie formerly known as “Orang Ikan,” Wiluan shared insights into the folklore elements that shaped the fearsome beast in “Monster Island.

As a passionate admirer, I’d express it like this: “I’m talking about ‘Orang Ikan’, a chilling creation that takes its roots from the classic horror films of yesteryears, such as Jack Arnold’s 1954 ‘Creature from the Black Lagoon’. It also borrows elements from Malay folklore and intriguing eyewitness accounts by Japanese forces stationed in East Indonesia during wartime.” (Based on Deadline’s report)

Orang Ikan is an Asian reimagining of the creature genre, set amidst the somber backdrop of World War II. Beyond its horror elements, the film emphasizes themes of brotherhood and humanity, portraying these values against the harsh reality of survival. This theme was influenced by John Boorman’s 1968 masterpiece, Hell in the Pacific.

Monster Island is released on Shudder on July 25.

The debut print issue of “Digital Spy” is available now! Grab a copy of the “British Comedy Legends” magazine from your local newsstand or online for only £3.99.
