Watch the trailer for Bong Joon-ho's long-awaited next masterpiece: Mickey 17

As a gamer who’s been through countless reincarnations in virtual worlds, I can’t help but feel a strange sense of kinship with the protagonist of Mickey 17. Bong Joon-ho never ceases to surprise me, and this time, he seems to be playing a game of his own – one that looks like a thrilling blend of sci-fi, action, and comedy. The trailer evokes a Goodfellas vibe, but with the unexpected addition of a giant pigeon (who knew organized crime had such a sense of humor?).

As a passionate gamer, I can’t help but marvel at the incredible run of Bong Joon-ho, the South Korean mastermind behind the lens. He was already churning out top-notch productions when his 2013 sci-fi sensation, “Snowpiercer,” catapulted him into international stardom. Since then, he’s been unstoppable, delivering gems like “Okja,” a moving critique of the livestock industry, and the groundbreaking class satire, “Parasite.

Once more, he’s taking on English roles for the film “Mickey 17.” This story revolves around an unfortunate human who decides to become an “expendable,” which essentially means he’s given perilous assignments and resurrected every time he dies – at least 17 times. In this production, Robert Pattinson plays Mickey, who following his stint as Batman, seems to be on a winning streak. The plot thickens when multiple versions of Mickey begin coexisting in the same reality. Check out the trailer above!

With Bong Joon-ho, you can never predict exactly what you’ll get. This film seems to be set in a humorous tone and might pay tribute to mafia movies. The trailer’s atmosphere is reminiscent of “Goodfellas”, featuring narration and Frank Sinatra music. Additionally, there’s an intriguing scene involving someone dressed as a giant pigeon at the 1:48 mark – have you noticed it too? What could that symbolize in this movie?

In this film, the ensemble is strong, boasting familiar faces from director Bong Joon-ho such as Steven Yeun, alongside fresh additions like Toni Collette and Mark Ruffalo. Given that I’d be keen to watch anything Bong Joon-ho produces, having esteemed acting talent on board certainly adds an extra appeal.

Initially slated for release in March of this year, “Mickey 17” has been postponed, with the cause remaining unclear and hopefully unsubstantiated. However, its official release date is now confirmed as January 31, 2025.
