Watch the sizzle reel for Peacock's canceled Jade City TV show

As a voracious reader and long-time fan of the fantasy genre, I’ve seen my fair share of adaptations that either fall flat or soar to new heights. The Green Bone Saga is undoubtedly one of those series that could easily join the latter category, given its unique blend of crime drama, martial arts, and magical realism.

In the year 2020, streaming platform Peacock initiated work on a TV show adaptation of Fonda Lee’s crime family fantasy book series, “The Green Bone Saga.” Regrettably, this project did not come to fruition as planned; in 2022, it was revealed that the development for the series had been suspended by Peacock. I am still disappointed about this turn of events, given how exceptional “The Green Bone Saga” is as a book series and how well-suited it appears for television. It’s hard to fathom why no studio has seized the opportunity to produce it so far.

If you haven’t yet encountered “The Green Bone Saga”, it’s a delightful discovery of potential new favorite reads for you! Mainly set on the island of Kekon, this series introduces a unique world where various criminal family clans battle for power and dominance over magical jade. This gem bestows warriors with extraordinary abilities such as enhanced strength and agility. It’s like blending elements of magical realism, crime dramas reminiscent of “The Godfather”, and Asian-inspired martial arts epics – this sums up the essence of “The Green Bone Saga”.

Title 1: “Jade City” delves into the lives of the three Kaul clan heirs from the No Peak family, who are vying for power in the criminal underworld of Kekon, while simultaneously battling against the formidable Ayt Madashi, leader of the enemy Mountain Clan.

Although there isn’t a televised series for “Jade City” yet, remnants persist from the time Peacock invested in its development. More recently, Lee posted a ‘sizzle reel’ on Twitter/X, which is like a preview using snippets from other movies to provide a glimpse of what the potential series might look like. After watching it…well, I’m still disappointed we don’t have this show yet. You can take a peek at it above.

Lee shared a glimpse of an alternative reality, stating this is a trailer created by screenwriter Dave Kalstein for the potential Jade City TV series during its development at Peacock many years back. It’s amazing how it resurfaced on my YouTube recommendations! I still adore it.

Dear HBO: for the love of all that is holy, adapt The Green Bone Saga

After you’ve enjoyed the captivating sneak peek of how a Green Bone series could portray its thrilling battles and complex criminal intrigues, let me share my puzzlement about why production studios haven’t snapped this up yet. Since Game of Thrones concluded, there has been a frenzy in Hollywood as they strive to replicate its success by acquiring fantasy and sci-fi intellectual properties rapidly. While some have turned out quite well, others have fallen short of expectations.

Currently, it seems we’re witnessing a bursting of a bubble, as budgets have inflated excessively and the gap between new seasons has stretched to an average of two years or more. Notably, many large-scale fantasy productions such as House of the Dragon and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power share a common trait – they are grand, lavish spectacles that demand immense effort to bring them to life.

The Jade City series, being a grounded crime drama, presents an ambitious undertaking, yet it carries less risk compared to shows with elements like fire-breathing dragons or ents. While there may be fights in The Green Bone Saga, they won’t involve large-scale battles as seen in medieval fantasies. Instead, the action could revolve around well-executed martial arts sequences with special effects. However, it’s the family drama that truly defines and elevates The Green Bone Saga. This blend of gritty crime storyline and deep familial ties could position it between shows like Warrior and The Penguin on television, offering a captivating viewing experience without straining studio budgets.

As cool as that Peacock sizzle reel is, the studio that always comes to mind for me when I think about Jade City is HBO, probably because they’re the home of prestige crime family dramas like The Sopranos. Of all the studios making these kinds of shows, Jade City feels the most on brand for HBO, and like the sort of series they would absolutely knock out of the park. Hopefully, someone at the studio realizes it at some point or another, so I can stop bringing it up every single time we get into discussions on Take the Black about book series which haven’t been adapted yet but deserve the small screen treatment.

Until then, there’s always the books! The Green Bone Saga is complete, which means you can devour the fully story anytime you wish. If you’re into fantasy books, I highly recommend it. The ebook of the first novel in the series is even on sale this week!
