Watch the new trailer for Dune: Prophecy, coming to HBO in November

As a long-time fan of science fiction and fantasy, I’ve seen my fair share of adaptations of beloved IPs. Some have been brilliant, others not so much. So when HBO announced they were developing a prequel to the iconic “Dune” universe, I was both excited and cautious.

HBO, known for pioneering unique TV shows, now focuses on major intellectual properties. Can it skillfully adapt “House of the Dragon” and “The Last of Us,” or will its programming begin to resemble other studios’ franchises in pursuit of success?

Thus far, things are going great with “The Last of Us” and “House of the Dragon” captivating audiences in 2023. However, I can’t help but ponder as I watch trailers for upcoming releases like “Dune: Prophecy,” a prequel to Denis Villeneuve’s acclaimed “Dune” films. Check it out above!

The new show is a prequel, taking place approximately thousands of years prior to Paul Atreides’ birth. It focuses on two Harkonnen sisters, portrayed by Emily Watson and Olivia Williams, as they work towards establishing the powerful Bene Gesserit order. An impressive ensemble cast including Travis Fimmel, Jodhi May, and Mark Strong adds to the show’s strong acting credentials.

The series takes inspiration from the novel “Sisterhood of Dune” by Kevin J. Anderson and Brian Herbert, written as sons of Frank Herbert, the original author of “Dune.” The story unfolds after the Butlerian jihad, a war between humans and robots, leaving society wary of advanced technology. However, it precedes the familiar “Dune” narrative. In this trilogy, emerging groups like the Bene Gesserit, Mentats, and Guild Navigators confront the fanatical Butlerians who vehemently oppose technology. The show’s themes could spark intriguing discussions about our contemporary perspectives on artificial intelligence.

As a long-time fan of Frank Herbert’s Dune saga, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and impatience as we wait for the release of Dune: Prophecy. I’ve been following the development of this highly anticipated adaptation closely, and though we don’t have an exact date yet, knowing that it will arrive in November keeps me hopeful.
