The trailer for a “visceral” thriller with a star-studded cast has arrived, and it is intense.
The film titled “The Cut” features Orlando Bloom, Caitríona Balfe, and John Turturro. It tells the story of a former boxer, played by Bloom, who decides to train for a comeback in the ring following a devastating loss.
In simpler terms, the official summary says that after suffering a loss that ends his boxing career, a once-great fighter decides to train again in pursuit of redemption. However, as his determination intensifies and his grasp on reality weakens, he might be slipping into something much more alarming or frightening.
In a recent development, the initial preview of the upcoming movie helmed by Sean Ellis has made its debut. It opens with Bloom’s character being subjected to several heavy impacts on the head, causing blood to trickle down.
In the gym, as he was cleaning the floor, someone tells him, “What matters to people isn’t statistics, but true champions.” Soon after, he is approached for one final fight.
In the next six days, the boxer needs to train rigorously and lose weight in order to compete, and a character portrayed by Turturro, known for being efficient, has been enlisted to assist with his preparation.
A vigorous workout sequence starts, displaying Bloom’s exercise regimen, strict eating habits, and the grueling methods demonstrated by Turturro’s character. This is highlighted by an emotional confrontation where Turturro shatters a vase against the wall.
A training sequence intensifies, revealing Bloom’s workout plan, his disciplined diet, and Turturro’s character’s tough methods. This includes a heated argument culminating in Turturro breaking a vase against the wall.
He tells Bloom it’s okay to change his mind, without any embarrassment attached. However, as his obsession with victory grows stronger and Turturro’s behavior towards the boxer becomes more aggressive, he resorts to risky tactics to attain success.
On September 5th, the film titled “The Cut” is scheduled to be launched. Already, it’s been praised as both “intense” and “heart-rending,” boasting an impressive 77% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
According to the Digital Journal’s review, this is a powerful story that feels authentic due to outstanding performances from all cast members. However, it should be noted that the emotional intensity of the story is amplified by the relentless portrayals of Bloom and Turturro.
The movie attempts multiple elements simultaneously, such as a flashback narrative that isn’t consistently coherent. However, its overall influence is largely attributed to Orlando Bloom’s powerful and transformative portrayal of an anonymous Irish fighter.
According to RogerEbert.com, the production is worth watching for its cast, particularly the main actors, but it’s not so much about aesthetic brilliance as it is about impressive technical skill.
The Cut is released in cinemas on 5 September.
