Binky Felstead discusses her life beyond Chelsea: In a candid new series, she reveals her journey from TV heartache to finding ultimate happiness, and shares why she no longer tunes in to MIC anymore.
As one of Made In Chelsea’s original stars, Binky Felstead grew up in the spotlight.
At the tender age of 20, I found myself stepping into the limelight on a popular E4 series. As the weeks rolled by, audiences eagerly followed my journey through tumultuous relationships and challenging friendships. Eventually, I chose to take a different path, dedicating myself wholeheartedly to motherhood.
Currently 34 years old and a contentedly married mother of three, Binky is more delighted than ever as she gears up to debut her new program, titled Beyond Chelsea. This upcoming show promises to bring her together with her former Made in Chelsea co-stars Rosie Fortescue and Lucy Watson once again.
It’s clear how happy she is when she invites me into her home, a cosy family abode in South West London where she lives with husband Max Darnton, daughter India, seven, and their sons, three-year-old Wolfie and Wilder, 18 months.
She remarks that her time on Made in Chelsea seems like another era in her life. “After all,” she explains, “I welcomed my child, India, at just 26 years old and departed from the series while expecting. Life took a sudden turn, requiring me to mature swiftly.
In simple terms, after departing from Made in Chelsea, she was frequently inquired, “When will the original cast reunite again?” So, last October, she proposed this idea to Channel 4.
Moving forward, I find myself at a new phase of existence, following the whirlwind years spent on reality television during my early twenties. A few of us have ventured into matrimony, some have become parents, and each of us has launched our own businesses. We’re all progressing through life in unique ways.
For devoted Made in Chelsea enthusiasts, it could prove quite intriguing to catch a glimpse of what post-reality TV and public life looks like for us – behind the scenes of our campaign shoots, business conferences, and collaborations with various brands.
In a dedication to authenticity, I find this approach remarkably unique. Unlike previous productions, we’re being captured in our natural habitats – our homes – with cameras rolling, offering a more organic and unrefined feel to the footage.
Due to my family responsibilities, as I now have three children, it’s no longer feasible for me to continue learning the filming methods of ‘Made in Chelsea’, since I can’t spend extended periods away at shooting locations.
Beyond Chelsea seems intended to offer something entirely novel and invigorating. It strikes me as potentially more substantial than merely a spin-off from Made in Chelsea.
Looking back at her initial reality TV experience, she confesses that there are times when she winces, remembering some of the clothes she wore and the things she did.
She chuckles, saying, ‘It’s rather extraordinary, for not many have lived their twenties under such scrutiny, with every blunder and disagreement captured on camera for public viewing.’
Although she maintains that she has no regrets, she acknowledges openly: “Indeed, I made some doubtful decisions during my youthful years, but isn’t that what everyone does? Unfortunately, some of my less-than-wise choices happened to be documented in photographs.
Although a fresh group of stars has taken over on Made In Chelsea, none of the initial cast are present anymore, but Binky confesses that she hasn’t felt compelled to tune in.
To put it in my own words, I’ve got nothing but respect for them, truly! However, as a now-married mother, our paths have diverged, and I find it challenging to connect with them on the same level as before.
For those who shared our childhood, they are likely to understand us better at present, given the context.
Binky seems to have a significant role as a mother these days, and together with her husband Max, they seem to embody an ideal, storybook family.
Her love story, extensively chronicled on MIC, was anything but straightforward, and she openly acknowledges that she encountered a couple of doubtful relationships.
In the heart of her narrative, I found myself engrossed in her tumultuous, yet captivating, rollercoaster ride with Alex Mytton – a fellow cast member who couldn’t seem to keep his promises and strayed from our heroine time and again.
Following their permanent separation from Alex, she started seeing Josh ‘JP’ Patterson. The pair decided to leave the show during season 13 upon announcing they were anticipating the birth of a baby girl.
Their relationship was not meant to be, however, and they split 15 months after India was born.
As a faithful follower, I can attest that Binky maintains a positive relationship with all her past lovers, expressing it this way: “I strive to keep good connections with everyone. There’s no animosity or issues between us. Neither Binky nor any of us carry any resentment.
In the previous year, JP alleged that the producers were harshly depicting and maliciously portraying him on the program, which he believed contributed significantly to their strained, unpleasant interaction.
He’s one of many MIC stars who have come to hit out at the show for its editing.
Yet Binky has made peace with her time on the programme.
She mentions: “It’s not necessary to delve deep, but essentially, creating drama is part of the deal. We had all signed contracts when we were quite young.
‘I try not to regret things in life. I try and learn from mistakes rather than regret them.’
It’s true that without Binky’s romantic history she wouldn’t be the woman she is today.
In her own words, she admits that prior to acquiring India, she was clueless about her duties and lacked any significant responsibilities. However, she often expresses that India rescued her, acting as a guardian angel in her life.
Although she experienced a broken heart upon parting ways with JP, this event eventually paved the way for her to encounter her extraordinary spouse, Max, whom she married in 2021.
‘He’s really special,’ Binky gushes. ‘I’m so grateful and lucky to have met someone like him.
Considering she was a single mother at that moment, he connected deeply with India, as if it were his home, and I can’t help but feel incredibly lucky to have encountered such an extraordinary person like him.
My children, without a doubt, mean the world to me. They are my joy, my essence – truly, I have never been as content as I am now.
Binky’s story stands as an exceptionally optimistic thread amidst the reality TV landscape, often criticized for its perils and lures of stardom.
Amidst a time when numerous individuals swiftly gain popularity through brief appearances on shows such as Love Island and Big Brother, what words of wisdom does Binky have for the upcoming crop of reality television stars?
She reassures, “Just be authentic to who you are. Use that for doing good and staying true to yourself. If you happen to have a significant following on social media, I believe it comes with a duty to share positivity and do some good.
It’s an approach that’s certainly benefited Binky and her Beyond Chelsea co-stars.
Beyond Chelsea airs on Tuesday at 10pm on E4.
