Watch the first trailer for the live-action remake of How To Train Your Dragon

As someone who has grown up with the magical world of DreamWorks Animation and its enchanting characters, I must admit that the recent trailer for the live-action remake of “How To Train Your Dragon” has left me both excited and apprehensive. The first time I laid eyes on Hiccup and Toothless in their animated glory, it was a moment of pure cinematic magic that resonated deeply within my heart.

This weekend, Universal is set to unveil one of this year’s most eagerly awaited films in cinemas: “Wicked“. As audiences flock to catch it, they’ll also get a sneak peek at one of the most anticipated movies slated for next year: a live-action reboot of “How To Train Your Dragon“, another production from Universal.

As a cinephile, I’m excited to share that some cinemas are hosting early showings of “Wicked”, with my review coming up later today. Lucky attendees at these screenings were even treated to an early peek at the trailer for “How To Train Your Dragon”! Of course, the cat’s out of the bag now, and the trailer has already spread like wildfire on the internet. Here it is below:

The story, influenced by Cressida Cowell’s 2003 book titled “How To Train Your Dragon”, revolves around a Viking lad named Hiccup who finds the aggressive Viking lifestyle challenging and restrictive. Growing up as a Viking, Hiccup is supposed to kill dragons that terrorize their village of Berk, but upon encountering a peaceful dragon named Toothless, he chooses friendship over violence instead.

Universal transformed “How to Train Your Dragon” into a thriving franchise by creating two additional films. A live-action adaptation could potentially rekindle this series. In this version, Mason Thames takes on the role of Hiccup, while Gerard Butler portrays Stoick the Vast, his father, who is depicted as a more conventional, warlike Viking.

From the trailer’s appearance, it seems that DreamWorks and Universal are opting for a faithful adaptation in their remake. Instead of reimagining Toothless for live-action, he appears strikingly similar to his animated counterpart, with the key difference being his interactions with real-life actors instead of computer-generated ones. This method is reminiscent of Disney’s approach with many of its live-action adaptations of classic animations. Given Disney’s financial success with this strategy, it’s understandable why DreamWorks might choose to emulate them.

It appears that there are multiple trailers circulating for the remake of “How To Train Your Dragon,” and one of them recently released by YouTube channel KH Studio is not an authentic trailer. In fact, this video was created artificially using generative AI technology.

Keep a watchful eye on that type of event as we approach its premiere date. The live-action adaptation of “How To Train Your Dragon” is set to hit cinemas on June 13, 2025. There’s speculation about whether Universal will consider adapting the sequels based on the success of the initial release at the box office.
