Watch the first trailer for Lesley Manville’s new British drama with Toby Jones
The first trailer for Lesley Manville and Toby Jones’ new movie Mr Burton has been unveiled.
A biographical film set in Britain will trace the early years of Oscar-winning actor Richard Burton, originally known as Richard Jenkins. This future star was guided and eventually adopted by his schoolteacher, Philip Burton.
In the small Welsh town of Port Talbot during the year 1942, young Richard Jenkins navigates life as a rebellious student, finding himself torn between the strains of his struggling family, the horrors of war, and his personal aspirations.
Yet, an unexpected chance presents itself when Richard’s innate flair for drama piques the interest of his teacher, Philip Burton.
As Philip took me under his wing, I flourished under his rigorous mentorship and the warm care of Ma Smith, our landlady. In essence, he was my guide in gaming, while she provided a nurturing environment for me to grow.
Yet, with the acting world becoming accessible to Richard, the weight of his past may hinder him from moving forward eternally.
In the movie, Harry Lawtey is cast as Richard Jenkins, Toby Jones portrays Philip Burton, and Lesley Manville assumes the character of Ma Smith.
In the trailer, Richard tells Mr. Burton about his aspiration to become an actor, and his teacher responds by saying, “To pursue acting, you’ll have to navigate certain social circles.
Following persistent encouragement and guidance from Mr. Burton, along with etiquette tutoring from Aunt Smith, Richard now has the chance to carve out a career as a classical actor at the foremost theater globally.
“Do you not understand the magnitude of that?” Mr Burton asks him.
Nevertheless, it’s evident that Richard’s co-actors do not view him as their peer, as one of them bluntly said to him: “I, a standby for the inebriated offspring of an inebriated coal miner.
Throughout his illustrious career, Richard Burton earned seven Academy Award nominations, along with recognition from the BAFTAs, Golden Globes, and Grammys. Tragically, he passed away in 1984 at the relatively young age of 58.
Mr Burton arrives in UK cinemas on April 4.
