Watch: Stranger Things 5 Stars (Almost) Spoil Vecna’s Redemption Twist

Millie Bobby Brown and Noah Schnapp, stars of Stranger Things, nearly revealed key details about the show’s main villain, Vecna, before the latest episodes were released. With the popular Netflix series, which started in 2016, set to conclude in 2025, fans are eagerly anticipating the final season. The cast and creators recently did a lot of interviews to promote Season 5, sharing some clues about what’s to come.

As viewers anticipate the final episodes of Stranger Things, many are wondering how the group will stop Vecna from continuing to cause chaos in the Upside Down. We saw him kidnapping children, including Holly, Mike and Nancy’s sister, as part of a larger, unknown scheme. But like many villains, there’s a chance Vecna might not remain purely evil and could potentially be redeemed.

Millie Bobby Brown and Finn Wolfhard were careful to avoid revealing any plot details about the upcoming Season 5 while talking to TV Guide. However, they hinted that Vecna might have a chance at redemption. When asked who they thought was the most misunderstood villain, Wolfhard said, “Honestly, Vecna,” but Brown quickly cut him off, telling him to stop talking about it.

The interviewer kept asking about how Vecna was portrayed in Season 4 and whether people misunderstood him. Millie Bobby Brown avoided answering directly, explaining, “Look, let’s just not go there. Today has been a long day, and we want to give you a good experience, but we’re not skilled enough to answer those kinds of questions without revealing too much. We wish we could, but we can’t.”

I was really fascinated by the way Millie Bobby Brown reacted when the interviewer started asking about misunderstood villains. It felt like Noah Schnapp was about to accidentally let slip something big about the show, and Millie seemed determined to steer clear of confirming anything! Both Noah and Maya Hawke immediately mentioned Vecna when asked, which makes me think we’re going to learn a lot more about him as the season goes on. I’m starting to wonder if they’re going to show a different side of Vecna, maybe even portray him as a hero in some way. It’s a really interesting possibility!

The creators of the show, the Duffer Brothers, have revealed that Vecna’s dramatic entrance in the first part of Season 5 was intentionally inspired by Darth Vader’s iconic appearance in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. This is significant because Darth Vader is a famous villain with a complex story – he started as a hero named Anakin Skywalker, fell to the dark side, and eventually found redemption by helping his son, Luke Skywalker, against the Emperor.

Although it’s just a theory right now, the creators of Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers, might be suggesting connections between Vecna and Anakin Skywalker, implying the characters could have more in common. The show has always been inspired by science fiction, and the fifth season especially seems to be taking cues from A Wrinkle in Time. Considering this, it’s possible the Duffers also used Darth Vader – one of the most iconic villains ever – as inspiration when developing Vecna’s story.

The first part of Stranger Things 5 came out on November 26th, with the second part arriving on December 25th. The series will conclude with a final, movie-length episode on Netflix and in select cinemas on December 31st.

Will Vecna Be Redeemed in Stranger Things?

With the final season of Stranger Things approaching, Vecna’s fate is uncertain. He could win, be destroyed, or potentially find redemption. While cast comments hint at a possible path to redemption, it remains to be seen what it would take for him to earn it.

I was shocked to learn the full story of Vecna! It turns out he first appeared in Season 4 as Henry Creel, a seemingly normal orderly at Hawkins Lab. But Dr. Brenner was experimenting on him, and they even used his blood in transfusions with other kids – including Eleven – hoping to unlock their powers. Henry was the one behind the terrible Hawkins Lab Massacre, but when he tried to get Eleven to join him in taking over the world, she refused and used her powers to banish him to the Upside Down. It’s crazy to think about how it all started!

The play, Stranger Things: The First Shadow, reveals more about Henry’s past, showing him as a troubled and isolated child whose psychic abilities led to his corruption. Ultimately, he gives in to these dark forces and becomes Vecna, putting his plan to kidnap children – a plot point we’ll see continue in Stranger Things 5 – into motion.

Because Henry’s transformation into Vecna probably happened through exposure to the dark forces of Dimension X, there’s a chance he isn’t beyond saving. Like Anakin Skywalker, who fell to the dark side due to his power, Henry could potentially be redeemed. We’ve already seen a glimmer of his former self, as Patty Newby was able to reach him and prevent him from harming her father in Stranger Things: The First Shadow, suggesting that connection and perhaps love could be key to bringing him back.
