James Norton hints at his forthcoming historical drama, “King & Conqueror”, which promises an unprecedented portrayal of a genuine rivalry not yet depicted on the screen.
In this production, the lead actor from “Happy Valley” portrays Harold Godwinson, who eventually became King Harold II of England. Sharing the screen with him is Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, known for his role in “Game of Thrones,” playing William, Duke of Normandy, also known as William the Conqueror.
Regarding the upcoming series airing on BBC later this month, Norton expressed his surprise that the story hadn’t previously been adapted for the screen.
The actor, who was both the series producer and a student at that time, confessed he had only a general idea about the story from school and wasn’t aware of the friendship between William and Harold prior to their encounter during the Battle of Hastings in 1066.

Norton shared with The Guardian that he had not known about the long-standing friendship between Harold and William prior to their fateful battle. It was only when they found themselves destined for a clash, with one of them inevitably losing their life due to Europe‘s territorial divisions, that this bond became apparent.
It seems extraordinary that no one has attempted this before, which is partly why we invested a considerable amount of time perfecting it.

Titled “King & Conqueror,” this engaging series, crafted by Michael Robert Johnson and skillfully directed by Baltasar Kormákur, delves into the pivotal conflict that shaped England and Europe’s future. The narrative explores the lead-up to the battle, spanning several decades and focusing on two influential family dynasties whose stories intertwine.
Harold from Wessex and William from Normandy were originally not planning to clash at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. However, due to unforeseen circumstances and their individual ambitions, they ended up fighting over who would rule England.
King & Conqueror premieres on BBC iPlayer and BBC One on 24 August.
