Watch Duty, first responders and Steve Guttenberg: Jimmy Kimmel’s ode to ‘superheroes’ of L.A. fires
Jimmy Kimmel is deeply touched by the outpouring of community support and the dedication shown by emergency responders during a tragic chapter in Los Angeles’ history marked by destructive wildfires and significant losses.
On Monday, Kimmel resumed his late-night TV schedule, starting with an emotional speech. He addressed the challenging, unsettling, and bizarre week that Los Angeles has experienced. Multiple fires erupted last week throughout Southern California, fueled by a dangerous and destructive windstorm. The worst fires, in Pacific Palisades and Altadena, are still burning and have caused damage or destruction to over 12,000 structures, resulting in the loss of 24 lives.
Kimmel expressed how awful the situation has been, considering the fires, such as the Sunset fire that once threatened his Hollywood studio. ‘Everyone in this city can relate,’ he added, ‘since many of us know someone, if not multiple people – families, friends, coworkers, neighbors – whose homes have been destroyed by these fires. The scary part is, we’re not even sure it’s all over yet.’

California
The National Weather Service has issued a severe warning for areas covering parts of Los Angeles and Ventura counties, advising of strong winds blowing between 45-70 miles per hour, dry conditions, and an increased likelihood of fast-spreading fires with intense fire behavior commencing at 4 a.m. on Tuesday.
Over the past week, it’s been an incredibly challenging and disheartening ordeal. However, Jimmie Kimmel highlighted a silver lining – witnessing the unity within the community as they rally to support one another during this tough time. Despite taking a moment to criticize President-elect Donald Trump for his comments on California officials, Kimmel shifted the focus to the heroic efforts of first responders, including the inmate crews who’ve been tirelessly fighting the wildfires.
Kimmel emphasized that we should always express our gratitude towards them,” he stated. Besides the local and distant first responders, he also praised the police force, the National Guard, local journalists, and the Watch Duty application as well.
“Real superheroes,” he added.

In his initial segment, Kimmel commended Angelenos for their charitable drives, businesses that have provided assistance to those in need, and “unforeseen hero” Steve Guttenberg. For the past week, the actor from “Police Academy,” Guttenberg, has stayed in his Palisades neighborhood to lend a hand in emergency operations. Guttenberg shared with Kimmel that his recent tasks involved rescuing a dog and extinguishing small fires in the area.
Despite the destruction caused by the fires, Kimmel noted that the past week has been a learning experience in many ways – from understanding firefighting jargon to gaining insights about emergency procedures.
As a self-proclaimed fire safety guru, I must admit that my knowledge was largely shaped by the adventures of Paw Patrol – until recently! Now, I can confidently say I’ve graduated from their pup-powered lessons to real-life expertise.

Celebrities such as Paris Hilton, Mandy Moore, Jeff Bridges, Mel Gibson, and Britney Spears are among the numerous Los Angeles County residents who have been impacted by the devastating wildfires.
Towards the end of Jimmy Kimmel’s 15-minute speech, there was a compilation showcasing various local news clips that emphasized community initiatives such as charity drives and free food programs.
Starting on Monday, the “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” crew declared their intentions to aid those impacted by the fires. They’ve established a donation station near their Hollywood studio, specifically at 6901 Hawthorn Ave. This charitable center operates from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day until Friday.
This week, residents living in Southern California should stay alert as officials have expressed worry about a potential surge of powerful winds combined with dry vegetation and low humidity, which could trigger new fires or cause existing ones to grow. Starting on Tuesday morning, an unusual fourth “extremely hazardous fire weather” warning became active and is expected to persist until Wednesday, impacting various areas in Los Angeles County and adjacent counties.
As a dedicated cinephile, I’m sharing this update: “Dangerous, devastating, and sweeping winds have arrived in Los Angeles,” Fire Chief Kristin Crowley stated during a press briefing yesterday. “We are adopting a proactive, forward-leaning stance… Positioning our fire patrols and engines strategically in the city’s high-risk areas with a low fire impact, ensuring swift response to any fresh flames.

As a passionate movie buff, I’m sharing about organizations, enterprises, and charities in the LA area that are extending a helping hand by providing free essentials, assistance, and support to those affected by the devastating wildfires.
