Warwick Davis shades Disney for cancelling (and burying) its Willow show: “It’s a travesty”
As a long-time movie buff who’s witnessed the rise and fall of countless shows and films, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment at the demise of Disney’s “Willow” series. Having grown up with the original 1988 film, it was a joy to see its continuation grace our screens on Disney+. The show had all the makings of a classic fantasy adventure, and the cast and crew poured their hearts into it.
The Disney+ TV series titled “Willow,” which is a continuation of the enchanting 1988 fantasy film by George Lucas, gained a dedicated fanbase upon its debut. This family-oriented fantasy was an enjoyable journey for viewers, leaving everyone eager for more episodes. However, Disney decided against renewing it for another season, dampening hopes for its continued existence.
You might recall that Disney heavily promoted the fantasy series “Willow.” Its marketing seemed more extensive than many other productions, except for those directly linked to their key franchises like Marvel and DC. Despite Disney’s high expectations, when the show initially aired, it became clear that viewership was not as strong as anticipated. Reviews were mixed, but the series did have a loyal fanbase. After much consideration spanning several months, the decision was made to halt further development of the reboot.
Apart from being terminated, the revival of Willow has vanished entirely from the streaming platform. It’s now impossible for viewers to find and watch the show on any digital platform. To make matters worse, there are no plans for a physical release either.
Amidst ongoing online protests against this mistreatment, Star Warwick Davis – famously known for his role as sorcerer Willow Ufgood in the original movie and reprising the character for the show – appears eager to fan the flames. In a post on X, he expressed his displeasure, stating, “It’s unfortunate that [Disney+] prioritize shareholders over subscribers in their creative decision-making.” He also shared a behind-the-scenes photo from season 1, inviting viewers to take a look.
This photo popped up as a memory, it’s a behind-the-scenes snapshot from the Willow series. 😃 I can’t help but feel disappointed that Disney Plus seems to prioritize shareholders over subscribers when making creative choices. #Justsaying
I only managed to watch each episode once!😡

It’s important to note that this isn’t the first occasion where Davis has criticized Disney for mishandling the show. His recent post with nearly 20,000 likes is a testament to the fact that fans are still upset about Disney’s handling of the series. A quick glance at the comments reveals discontent, such as “The series was brilliant and I can’t stand what Disney did with it” and “JUSTICE FOR WILLOW!!!” along with the sentiment that the show had more to offer and it’s unfortunate they didn’t continue the storyline.
Speaking up against Disney’s decision to cancel shows prematurely is entirely justified, even though it may not immediately alter their stance. Particularly egregious is their approach with shows like Willow, where they seemingly erase the series completely from existence.
