‘Warrior’: Tom Hardy’s MMA Action Thriller Remains a 10/10 Masterpiece

I’ll never forget when Tom Hardy played Charles Bronson. Seriously, that performance was incredible! He showed Bronson fighting all sorts of opponents – huge guys, even two at once, and… well, there was that unfortunate scene with a dog. After seeing that, I honestly wished Hollywood would just typecast him as a fighter forever! Thankfully, it didn’t quite happen that way, but I was thrilled when he stepped back into a fighting role a few years later.

In 2011, Tom Hardy starred in Warrior, a sports drama focused on martial arts, directed by Gavin O’Connor, who also directed The Accountant. Despite the title, the film isn’t about historical warriors or the martial arts series of the same name. It’s a story about a fighter with incredible determination. Even after 15 years, the movie still feels impactful and relevant.

A Family Affair Plays Out in the Ring in ‘Warrior’

As a huge MMA fan, it’s crazy to me that we still don’t have the definitive movie about the sport. You know, something like Raging Bull for boxing, or even a Rockystyle underdog story. It feels like most MMA movies fall into the same predictable patterns. They’re either super focused on the moral side of fighting, or just endless fight scenes like Mortal Kombat. And when the fighters aren’t actually fighting, they’re always dealing with tough personal lives – struggling with money, or having relationship problems. It’s like they always* have something going on outside the cage, a constant uphill battle, unlike someone like Jay-Z who just seems to handle everything!

To be frank, Warrior relies on these techniques to quickly gain an advantage. The fighters initially appear weak and unremarkable, but are later presented as incredibly fit and muscular. The impact of each hit is exaggerated for dramatic effect, and slow-motion replays make the punches and kicks seem incredibly powerful. Every match is a critical test – a loss can be devastating and permanently change a fighter’s fate.

Despite a familiar storyline, Warrior stands out thanks to its compelling plot and strong performances. Tom Hardy plays Thomas “Tommy” Riordan, a troubled ex-Marine searching for meaning in his life. The film begins with him reconnecting with his father, a recovering alcoholic who now enthusiastically praises God. Tommy is skeptical of his father’s transformation, but asks him to train him for Sparta, a mixed martial arts tournament with a $5 million prize. Interestingly, Tommy’s brother, Brendan, is also competing in the tournament. The question is: will these two brothers face off in the championship round?

‘Warrior’ Does Fan Service the Right Way

While Tom Hardy is a draw, fans of MMA and combat sports will want to know who else appears in the film. Director Gavin O’Connor delivers with a cast full of actual fighters, including Kurt Angle, Anthony Johnson, Nate Marquardt, and several others – all making an effort to perform. However, Nick Nolte truly shines, and his Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor is well-deserved.

Though the movie Warrior doesn’t offer a unique take on fight choreography or the familiar trope of family conflict, it’s a powerful film because of its underlying themes. We see the struggles of parenthood through Brendan, who faces financial ruin trying to afford his daughter’s life-saving heart surgery. Meanwhile, Tommy’s reputation is damaged by the revelation that he abandoned his unit after they were killed in action, and he’s also dealing with the trauma of post-traumatic stress.

These two fighters battle not only each other, but also their own personal struggles. It’s hard not to feel for them as their stories unfold. However, those inner conflicts disappear the moment they enter the ring, where they become focused and determined competitors. Along the way, you’ll even pick up some fighting skills – maybe you’ve heard of techniques like the omoplata, rolling knee-bar, or rear-naked choke? With MMA becoming so popular, these details add a deeper understanding of the sport.
