Warner Bros. Axes Cartoonito: Fans Left in Shock!
Audience members are finding it hard to stay composed as Warner Bros., known for its long-standing reputation with franchises like DC Comics, Looney Toons, and Terminator, continues its pattern of trimming down its media offerings. This latest move affects a well-loved TV series that originated in the late 90s. Over recent years, Warner Bros. has developed a bit of an unsavory reputation for eliminating projects from its roster, such as Batgirl and Coyote vs. Acme, and scaling back significantly on both the big screen and television.
Warner Bros. Discovery has decided to discontinue the popular Cartoonito brand in their recent changes. This move signifies another phase in the studio’s strategy to reduce the amount of animated content they produce, while instead focusing more on their collection of animated characters and brands.
Multiple animation-centric social media platforms recently highlighted a post about the Caroonito cut. These industry insiders swiftly revealed that the longstanding preschool programming block on Cartoon Network, owned by Warner, will no longer be airing from May 26th onwards.
In 2021, the Cartoonito block made its debut, being a revamped version of children’s programming for young ages. It began with an initial eight hours of morning schedule filled with previously acquired television series for preschoolers.
Since then, the duration of the block has been substantially decreased, with it now lasting only 90 minutes each weekday.
It seems that the Cartoon Network subsidiary won’t appear in the channel’s future lineup, which might suggest its removal from broadcast. If this happens, it will mark the end of a significant chapter in Cartoon Network’s history, as its origins trace back to 1996.
What Is Wrong at Cartoon Network?
Over the past few years, Cartoon Network and Warner Bros. Animation have faced a series of unfavorable events, and this recent cut from Cartoonito is just the latest piece of disappointing news in this string.
Although Warner Bros. has halted several live-action productions as part of their efforts to control their finances, it seems that their animate projects have been more significantly affected by Warner Bros.’ criticism and changes.
As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I’ve noticed that since the Warner Bros./Discovery merger in 2022, there seems to be a shift in focus away from animated content at the studio. This move might not bode well for a prestigious brand like Cartoon Network in the long run.
Currently, it appears as if the Cartoonito block is all that’s offered on the channel owned by WB, but it feels inevitable that it will expand beyond its current scope in the near future.
In a May 2025 article for Cartoon Network published by Bloomberg Screentime, Felix Gillette speculated that the animated network may no longer have a future. This is because, after moving its focus to streaming services several years earlier, Warner Bros. now considers children’s programming, which would typically be found on Cartoon Network, as not being essential to their Max strategy.
As the studio proceeds, it’s resulted in numerous series being displaced from their streaming platform, which is now known as Max, due to the removal of animated content (not just from Cartoon Network). This change has left around dozens of series without a streaming residence.
In other words, given the significant transformations happening at Warner Bros., it wouldn’t be unexpected if Cartoon Network were to cease operations entirely, thereby concluding its over three decades of television broadcasting.
