Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 Review – Titus Returns With Gusto in a Sequel Well Worth the Wait

As a seasoned Warhammer 40k fan with decades of battles under my belt, I must say that Space Marine 2 has truly captured the essence of grim darkness and unrelenting warfare. The Tyranid invasion on Kadaku feels like a brutal testament to the horrors of war, much like my own family reunions.

In the ominous atmosphere of a distant future filled with endless conflict, “Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2” begins. The line that sets the tone is, “In the grim, unrelenting darkness of the future, there’s only war.” This war unfolds on the planet Kadaku, where Titus, our returning hero, leads a tight-knit trio of Ultramarines – Gadriel and Chairon. As Tyranids threaten mankind, they find themselves in a dire situation from the get-go, forcing them to fight their way through hordes of enemies in a bloody struggle – and “Space Marine 2” rarely gives you a moment’s respite

For approximately thirteen years now, the initial version of “Space Marine” has been out, and finally, its long-anticipated follow-up maintains the brutal and unyielding style that defined the original. However, instead of Orks, this time we’re facing an onslaught of Tyranids. The game continues the story of Titus, who was once a captain but has been reduced to lieutenant following accusations of corruption in the first installment. Despite the demotion, he remains every bit as powerful, wielding a Bolter and chainsword just as formidably as before. In essence, this new game shares many similarities with 2011’s “Space Marine”, but it boasts improved visuals and an even more intense experience

Developer Saber Interactive seems to have leveraged its expertise in managing zombie hordes from World War Z, applying it to the Tyranids in Space Marine 2. The game is capable of unleashing hundreds of ‘hormagaunts’ at you simultaneously. Unlike a typical third-person shooter, this game features an authentic melee combat system that allows for guarding, parrying attacks, and dodging. Slashing through large groups in a gory shower of blood and dismembered body parts is always an exhilarating experience. Before each campaign mission, you can customize your loadout, allowing you to switch between weapons such as the chainsword, power sword, combat knife, or thunder hammer (each with their own finishers and distinctive moves). Additionally, there are various Bolter pistols and rifles to select from

Before hopping onto the Thunderhawk gunship for a drop into combat, don’t forget to stop by the Armor Hall on the Battle Barge Resilient (SM2’s main base) to select your weapons from those you’ve earned. It can be helpful to test out various weapon combinations before deciding on one that suits you best. You’ll discover a variety of options, such as scoped Bolters, Bolters with integrated grenade launchers, heavy Bolters, Melta Rifles, and massive machine guns or flamethrowers capable of carving a bloody path through your foes. Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is the type of shooter that could have become excessively repetitive, but Saber has added enough variety to keep you engaged

During the game, certain scenarios recur, such as battling Tyranid Gargoyles before they destroy a vital object and lead to mission failure, safeguarding a generator or bomb while it’s powering up, or warding off waves of enemies while waiting for transportation. Many of these stages can be frustrating, especially when playing alone, since the AI controlling Chairon and Gadriel isn’t always effective. A specific level involving a reactor on the verge of explosion is particularly aggravating, as Titus’ allies are not very helpful, leaving you to perform most of the tasks while Tyranids relentlessly attack the core, escalating the danger. I barely survived with only 1% left before total destruction

Although the AI performs well in resuscitating you when you’re knocked out, it lacks significant cooperation – it’s clear that the best way to enjoy Space Marine 2 is by playing it online with other humans. The special skills of Titus, Chairon, and Gadriel become more valuable in co-op. For instance, Titus’ ‘Righteous Fury’ creates a temporary advantage by increasing damage output and recharging health, which is especially useful in single-player, despite its slow cooldown. On the other hand, Chairon can use his ‘Auspex’ to mark enemies for vulnerability, while Gadriel’s ‘Battle Cry’ pushes opponents back, causing harm simultaneously

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but admire how Saber masterfully adds a twist to the campaign (without revealing the secret here), offering a refreshing change at just the right moment. However, if you need a break from the main tale, there are other modes available. You can access these through the console on the Battle Barge. The ‘Operations’ mode presents standalone 3-player co-op missions, each with various Space Marine classes to choose from (Tactical, Assault, Vanguard, Bulwark, Sniper, and Heavy) and levels to progress. Additionally, there are four increasing levels of threat to tackle. The ‘Eternal War’ mode is the competitive multiplayer aspect of the game, featuring 6v6 matches in Annihilation, Seize Ground, and Capture & Control, each offering a unique experience. Despite the story not being incredibly gripping (though die-hard Warhammer fans might find it captivating), the gameplay mechanics, especially the shooting and melee combat, are solid and keep you coming back for more. Given the world’s perpetual grim darkness of war, it’s no wonder the tone is consistently somber. After all, what else would you expect in a world consumed by war?

Playing the new version of Space Marine 2 offers an exhilarating experience, with its excessive violence providing immense satisfaction. The DOOM-inspired execution moves not only add excitement but also restore health and armor, while the combat mechanics are incredibly robust
