Warframe 99 lets you fight a ‘90s boy band in space and I don’t know what else you want

As a long-time fan of Warframe, I can’t help but be utterly captivated by the audaciousness and visual inventiveness of this game. Digital Extremes has always approached Warframe with a singular vision: go big or go home. And nowhere is that more evident than in the recent reveal of Warframe 1999.

“Few games are as outrageously creative, visually stunning, and endlessly expansive as Warframe. Digital Extremes appears to approach the game’s design with unbridled enthusiasm and ambition.”

As a dedicated gamer, I can confidently say that the most compelling evidence of Warframe’s uniqueness comes from the unveiling of its major update in 1999. This upgrade doesn’t just enhance Warframe’s sleek sci-fi visuals, but it infuses elements reminiscent of Metal Gear, beloved anime series, boy bands, and those nostalgic early instant messaging platforms.

In a distant, science fiction-driven future, Warframe is set. The advanced Orokin civilization has expanded its dominion to include Mercury, Mars, and other planets in the Origin System. However, their efforts to expand beyond this reach resulted in an unforeseen AI rebellion. Players assume the identity of a Tenno, an ancient warrior class residing within high-tech and powerful exoskeletons. Equipped with these mechanical bodies, players leap, shoot, and maneuver skillfully through hordes of adversaries.

As a fan of Warframe, I used to find the game’s world so unfamiliar and hard to connect with, but Warframe 99 completely changes that perspective for me. In this version, Protoframes are all human characters with distinct faces, adding a relatable touch. They zip around on cool motorcycles, spend time at the mall playing arcade games, and even hang out at places that look like modern-day Pizza Huts. The decor is reminiscent of recognizable, contemporary styles – graffiti that looks like stylized “S” letters on walls, red plastic cups that resemble old Pizza Hut designs, and vintage arcade games. It’s as if these elements were taken straight from the doodles in a teenager’s notebook and brought to life.

As someone who’s been a long-time fan of Warframe, I can tell you that the lore of this game is nothing short of intriguing. And let me tell you, the TennoCon presentation really took it to another level! So, imagine this: you’re Arthur, donning the Excalibur Protoframe, bravely venturing into the infested tunnels beneath the mall. Now that’s what I call living on the edge!

I’ve witnessed numerous space battles in the past, but none compared to facing off against the metaphysical resurrection of a famous pop group, reborn from borrowed bodies and reconstructed through shared ideologies. These imaginative leaps, executed with heartfelt conviction and panache, are what make Warframe so enjoyable.

The main challenge in looking forward to Warframe’s ninth installment is the necessity of completing most of the previous Warframe content first. Although I enjoy Warframe immensely, it’s an extensive and intricate game. For newcomers eager about the characters in 99, they must first endure extended periods of faceless robot gunman gameplay before engaging with them directly. This journey is rich with creativity, character development, and unexpected plot turns, but it demands a significant investment of time that not all players may be prepared to make.

New players finding their footing in Warframe may require some time and patience, as Digital Extremes continues to enhance the onboarding process with new features. However, this learning curve can be quite challenging. Nevertheless, I am deeply captivated by the game’s stunning visuals and innovative design, evidenced by the unveiling of 99 at this year’s TennoCon. Rather than opt for a polished, predictable gaming experience, I prefer the thrill of an unrefined, adventurous journey.
