War comes to Middle-earth in new trailer for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

As a long-time Tolkien enthusiast and someone who has spent countless hours immersed in the rich lore of Middle-earth, I can hardly contain my excitement for the second season of “The Rings of Power.” The intricate tapestry of storytelling, the breathtaking visuals, and the stellar cast have made this prequel a must-watch for any fan.

Preparations are underway for season 2 of “The Rings of Power,” Amazon’s high-budget prequel series based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings” set during Middle-earth’s Second Age, centuries before Frodo and Aragorn were born. In the first season, Sauron (played by Charlie Vickers) gained influence among Middle-earth’s elves and humans by posing as a human named Halbrand, but Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) unmasked him as the rising dark lord he was and refused his offer to rule the world together. Now, under the guise of a divine entity called Annatar, Sauron is intensifying his schemes to dominate Middle-earth by creating enchanting jewelry with sinister intentions.

In essence, he intends to craft multiple enchanted rings and disseminate them among the people of Middle-earth, thereby gaining control over them. He approaches Elven blacksmith Celebrimbor (played by Charles Edwards), who is seen in the new trailer, possibly hinting at their collaboration despite Sauron’s true nature being exposed. The series may reveal that Celebrimbor is susceptible to Sauron’s persuasions, as his disguise might not be enough to deceive him completely. According to the trailer, it seems that Celebrimbor is receptive enough for Sauron to infiltrate their relationship, and once he gains entry, there appears to be no way back.

In an interview with Games Radar, Charlie Vickers discussed the new persona of Sauron, stating, “Every aspect had to stem from a psychological backstory. The entire concept was built upon the psychology I’d already developed for the character, so everything that defined Halbrand must also define Annatar.”

I started off being like, ‘Well he has to move completely differently, talk completely differently,’ but the further we got through the process of developing it I realized they share a lot of things. The main thing is you know wanting to make rings, right? This idea that’s planted at the end of the first season – to heal Middle-earth.

Middle-earth has indeed been through a lot. Prior to the events of The Rings of Power, Sauron’s old boss Morgoth held sway over the land, which was devastated in a huge conflict known as the War of Wrath. In J.R.R. Tolkien’s mythology, it’s said that Sauron’s intentions to rebuild Middle-earth were at first good, but he slid back into evil over time. We see glimpses of a great battle in the trailer, one that’s supposedly will last multiple episodes. This is likely the Battle of Eregion, an attack on the biggest Elven civilization in Middle-earth at the time. Clearly, Sauron isn’t above bringing war to Middle-earth in the name of saving it, but how much will be left to save when he’s done?

Mount Doom glimpsed in new ad for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2

Could it be possible that in a new promotional video for the second season of The Rings of Power, there appears to be the flames reminiscent of Mount Doom, the notorious forge where Sauron is known to have created the One Ring. Could we witness this momentous event unfold during this upcoming season?

In conclusion, the trailer hints at a conflict between Sauron and Galadriel, who had a strained relationship in the past. As Vickers explained, there seems to be an underlying connection between them, not just geographically but psychologically as well. Given their lofty status, it’s likely that their bond goes beyond mere proximity. When Galadriel refuses Sauron at the end of season one, it appears to infuriate him, and there seems to be a part of him that believes he can win her over or persuade her to join him.

The second installment of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” will begin streaming on Amazon Prime Video as of August 29.
