The Waller DCU TV show has received a troubling update.

A TV series starring Amanda Waller is being developed by DC Studios and Warner Bros. Television. Viola Davis, who previously portrayed the character in several films – including ‘Suicide Squad’ (2016), ‘The Suicide Squad’ (2021), ‘Black Adam’ (2022), and ‘Peacemaker’ – is expected to return for the show. The announcement was made in 2023.

The Waller series was initially planned to be released before the Superman movie in 2025, but scheduling didn’t work out. The 2023 Hollywood strikes played a role in the delay, and James Gunn has mentioned that finalizing the scripts has been challenging.

In an interview with Variety, Casey Bloys, head of HBO Max, discussed the show’s status and whether filming might start in the near future.

Bloys explained it like this: the show isn’t happening immediately, but ‘Lanterns’ is scheduled to premiere this summer.

Bloys didn’t offer any further updates on the Waller series, and his remarks suggest it’s still in early stages of development. There’s currently no confirmed release date.

When the project was first announced, James Gunn described the upcoming story as centering on Amanda Waller, portrayed by Viola Davis, and her collaboration with the members of the Peacemaker team. He highlighted that the story was developed by Christal Henry, known for her work on Watchmen, and Jeremy Carver, the creator of Doom Patrol, calling it a ‘fantastic, out-of-this-world’ story he was eager for audiences to experience.

In August 2025, Gunn shared with People magazine that progress was being made on a project, though some aspects were taking longer than expected. He specifically mentioned that getting Viola Davis back into her role as Waller was something he was eager to see happen.
