Wallace & Gromit creator addresses future of the series
As a die-hard Wallace & Gromit fan since their debut in 1989’s “A Grand Day Out,” I can’t help but feel a surge of nostalgia and pure joy knowing that the creative genius behind these clay characters, Nick Park, has confirmed there are more adventures yet to come! After a sixteen-year hiatus, it was a delight to see Wallace and Gromit back on our screens with “Vengeance Most Fowl” this Christmas.
According to its creator, Nick Park, the most recent Wallace & Gromit escapade will not mark the conclusion of their thrilling adventures.
On Christmas Day, BBC One aired the new Wallace & Gromit adventure titled “Vengeance Most Fowl,” which brings back the beloved cheese-loving inventor and his beagle companion after 16 years since their last full-length film “A Matter of Loaf and Death.” Notably, this story sees the return of the villainous penguin, Feathers McGraw. As stated by Park, “Vengeance Most Fowl” is definitely not the end of the Wallace & Gromit saga.
[He said,] ‘Without a doubt, this isn’t the final chapter,’ [he told BBC]. ‘I believe they still have lots of spring left in their trampoline.’
“We’ll carry on. There’s always ideas worth kicking about,” he continued.
Merlin Crossingham, Park’s co-director, added, “Just a moment, please. They require some time to create.
The initial Wallace & Gromit film featuring Ben Whitehead as the voice actor, following Peter Sallis’ retirement in 2010 and passing in 2017, is titled “Vengeance Most Fowl.
As I stepped into Wallace’s shoes for the big screen, I couldn’t help but feel the weight of Sallis’ iconic portrayal. Yet, I was determined to make this character my own, paying homage while carving out a unique path for myself in this role.
In his statement prior to the new film’s premiere, the voice actor noted that taking on a character already portrayed by someone else is never straightforward, especially considering Peter’s storied history. It’s crucial to understand that you won’t be able to replicate their performance exactly.
Nick Park and Merlin Crossingham also confirmed this point, explaining that a voice match wasn’t necessary for the current situation. Nevertheless, I aimed to incorporate as much of Peter’s original portrayal into the character as possible, given that the character was initially designed with Peter in mind.
In creating his character, I drew heavily on traits from Peter, yet I infused some of my unique elements and portrayals into it as well.
The animated special “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl” premiered on BBC One this past Christmas Day. You can catch it streaming now on BBC iPlayer. For those outside the UK, it will be available globally on Netflix starting January 3, 2025.
