AMC achieved a remarkable feat with The Walking Dead: they successfully adapted the graphic novel – known for its mature content – into a hugely popular TV series that dominated pop culture for over ten years. Even as the original show’s popularity waned and actors left, the network expanded the universe with spin-offs like The Walking Dead: Dead City, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, and The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Lived, each attracting its own audience. Now, with some of those spin-offs concluding, rumors suggest they’ll be combined into a large-scale event similar to Avengers: Endgame. While creator Robert Kirkman hasn’t dismissed the idea, he acknowledges it would be incredibly difficult to pull off.
I recently chatted with Kirkman over at MovieWeb, and when I asked about those rumors of a massive, Endgamelevel event happening, he didn’t beat around the bush. He just said, simply, “No.” Thankfully, he did* elaborate a bit after that, and gave us some more to think about…
You know, as a huge fan, I really hope we get to see those characters reunited someday. It feels like ages since they were all together, and now everyone’s off doing their own thing with the spin-offs and everything. But honestly, there are no plans being discussed right now. Getting everyone back together would be a massive puzzle, with everyone’s busy schedules and all. So, it might not ever happen, or it might happen down the line – who knows? Right now, I just can’t say for sure.
Creating more content in a popular franchise is tough, but The Walking Dead has done it successfully. Not only have characters gotten their own spin-off shows, but entirely new series like Fear the Walking Dead and The Walking Dead: World Beyond have also been created with their own unique casts. This idea isn’t just a fan theory, though – someone involved with the show hinted at a big reunion similar to Avengers: Endgame.
Scott Gimple Is to Blame for Reunion Theories
Even as the actors from The Walking Dead become famous and take on other projects, the show continues to bring them back. A new clip reveals Andrew Lincoln reprising his iconic role as Rick Grimes in The Ones Who Live. After leaving the series in Season 9, many fans believed this return would never happen.
Look, I’ve been watching this franchise for a long time, and there’s been a lot of turnover behind the camera. But Scott Gimple? He’s been a constant, really steering the ship for years now. Recently, I read an interview with him in TVLine where he actually said what a lot of us fans are hoping for – a big, *Endgamestyle event bringing everyone back together. It’s exciting to hear that’s something he’s interested in!
I’ve definitely thought about doing a big crossover event, like bringing everything together in a major way, and I’ve hinted at it here and there. But whether or not it actually happens, and how, is hard to say, because a lot of things need to line up.
While ‘Dead City’ and the Daryl Dixon show were both really strong, this new series, ‘The Ones Who Live,’ is still taking shape. I’m laying the groundwork for the story, but things could definitely change as we go. So, to answer your question, I think yes, it’s moving forward…
Even if those plans for connecting different stories don’t happen, there’s still plenty of The Walking Dead content available, and more created by Robert Kirkman is on the way.
