Walk It Out
The world of hip-hop is deeply saddened by the demise of renowned rap artist and music producer DJ Unk, who tragically passed away at the tender age of 43.
From Atlanta originates the artist known as Anthony Leonard Platt, who rose to prominence in the mid-2000s by adding his unique touch to Southern hip-hop, notably in the ‘crunk’ style of music.
On a sad note, Anthony Forever’s wife, Sherkita Long-Platt, announced on Facebook in the afternoon, expressing, ‘Kindly give us our privacy during this difficult time. I have lost my husband and the children have lost their father. Our lives will never be the same again. I will always cherish you, Anthony.’
DJ Unk saw the zenith of his career with his 2006 smash hit “Walk It Out,” which was released on his first album titled “Beatin’ Down Yo Block.
It also sparked a viral dance craze.
Although his exact cause of death hasn’t been formally announced yet, reports from TMZ suggest that the rapper had been experiencing various health problems since at least 2009.
After the achievement of “Walk It Out”, DJ Unk unveiled his second studio album titled “The 69 Boyz” in the year 2007. This album included the popular track, “2 Step”.
Although it didn’t reach the same level of widespread popularity as his first release, it firmly established DJ Unk as a significant figure in the Southern hip-hop genre.
DJ Unk’s music became synonymous with the ‘snap music’ movement.
This particular branch of hip-hop originating from the South is recognized by its relaxed, melodious rhythms and distinctive ‘snap’ sound.
In the mid-2000s, DJ Unk, much like D4L, Dem Franchize Boyz, and Lil Jon, was a significant contributor to the rise of a unique hip-hop sound, making it prominent within the music scene.
Following his significant achievement, notably the massive hit “Walk It Out,” the widespread popularity of DJ Unk began to dwindle.
In my dedication to creating music, I found that no subsequent singles quite matched the resounding success of my initial release.
To this day, I can’t help but marvel at the profound influence he had on Southern hip-hop. His beats and rhymes carved out a unique era that was the lifeblood of every club and dance floor.
Despite the focus moving elsewhere, his impact on the musical genre continues to be honored by both fans and creators.
In recent times, we learned about the tragic demise of DJ Unk, which followed the heart-rending news from last week regarding the shooting and subsequent death of Project Pat’s son, Patrick Houston Jr., at only 21 years old in a Tennessee park.
As a diehard admirer, I’m heartbroken to share that Houston, who bore the familial connection as nephew to Three 6 Mafia co-founder Juicy J, sadly took his last breath in Imogene Heights, Memphis on Friday, as reported by TMZ.
According to Memphis Police, a shooting took place approximately at 1:15 p.m., and upon their arrival, Houston Jr. was discovered unresponsive at the location of the incident.
