Vox Machina creators preview changes coming in season 3 (and in The Mighty Nein show)

As a seasoned gamer and ardent fan of Critical Role, I can hardly contain my excitement for the third season of The Legend of Vox Machina! Having followed their epic adventures since the early days of D&D streaming, it’s a joy to see how the series has evolved and grown.

The upcoming third season of “The Legend of Vox Machina” is rapidly approaching, and it promises to be a momentous one! This season will conclude the Chroma Conclave storyline, placing our motley crew of heroes against a dragon conspiracy. This epic tale will catapult the franchise to unprecedented heights. As star Travis Willingham (Grog) shared with Entertainment Weekly, “Season 3 is going to make an impact! It will challenge each character, strain relationships (both familial and romantic), but also reveal fractures within this close-knit family that’s beginning to buckle under the weight of the world and forces beyond Exandria. This is the first season where things won’t be the same at the end as they were at the start.”

The animated series titled “The Legend of Vox Machina” is based on a “Dungeons & Dragons” campaign led by Critical Role, a group of voice actors who have gained immense popularity for their public D&D games. After several seasons, it appears that Willingham and the team are growing more daring in deviating from the established path. As stated by star Sam Riegel (Scanlan), new characters not originally part of the D&D campaign will be introduced in season 3, causing shock when they appear.

The group of characters, such as Keyleth (Marisha Ray), Pike (Ashley Johnson), Percy (Taliesin Jaffe), Vex’ahlia (Laura Bailey) and Vax’ildan (Liam O’Brien), will venture to more distant locations geographically. As Willingham mentioned, they aim to go much beyond Emon and Whitestone, the primary settings for seasons 1 and 2. The characters will be utilizing their travel documents extensively, not just to move outside of the country but, in some instances, even leaving the realm. It’s been fascinating observing Titmouse adjust to the chaos we create in our writing.

It’s intriguing to ponder what fresh developments might unfold in this series, but it remains the culmination of what we’ve experienced so far, with numerous characters – both virtuous and malevolent – resurfacing. As Willingham mentioned, “You may think there are only three dragons and they are the antagonists, but that is not entirely accurate.” Indeed, there are three dragons who serve as villains, but they are not the only ones causing trouble. There are other villains, some familiar and others new, that will emerge and pose a constant threat to our characters throughout the season – and potentially for many more episodes to come.

The Mighty Nein show is “a complete departure” from the original Critical Role campaign

As a gaming enthusiast, it seems like “beyond” might be hinting towards “The Mighty Nein,” another animated series based on Critical Role, which features a completely new campaign. The cast from Vox Machina will lend their voices to fresh characters this time around. “It’s fantastic,” Matt Mercer said. “We’re deep into production and everything is progressing smoothly. We could say tantalizing things like ‘it’s larger,’ ‘it’s more intense,’ ‘it’s superior.’ It’s been an amazing project to be a part of, but I think 2025 will unveil some truly exciting surprises that we can eventually share with the world.

Critical Role currently boasts a substantial online and offline presence, and these upcoming Prime Video shows are merely broadening their dominion. Riegal expresses his eagerness as he shares that “The Mighty Nein” will offer a distinctive tone compared to “Vox Machina“, and he’s eager for the audience to catch their initial glimpse.

Up until now, the tale of Vox Machina has largely followed the original campaign. However, it seems that the Critical Role team plans to deviate from The Mighty Nein campaign right from the beginning. This is similar to how we diverted slightly with season 3 of LVM, veering away from a more traditional narrative and exploring the possibility of altering the storyline. Unlike Vox Machina, The Mighty Nein represents a complete departure from the start. You can still expect the familiar elements and significant moments, but the way we’re telling this new story is going to be entirely different and we believe it will be well-received. We’re warning you early on that while you’ll meet your favorite characters, you’re embarking on a completely fresh journey.

The story of Vox Machina continues on Amazon Prime Video starting October 3, as new episodes will be rolled out in sets of three each week. Additionally, it looks like the adventures of The Mighty Nein are scheduled for release in the year 2025.
