As a movie critic with a background in public health, I strongly support Violet Affleck’s stance on mask mandates and prioritizing the health of vulnerable members of our community. Her personal experience with a post-viral condition and long COVID has given her a unique perspective on the impact that even minor viruses can have on people’s lives.
Violet Affleck has expressed her disagreement with the proposed mask ban withdrawals by Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass.
At the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday, the 18-year-old daughter of Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner made a comment during the public section, even though mask regulations weren’t under discussion. Identifying herself as a local resident and first-time voter, she donned a mask, addressed the potential risks of banning masks for “vulnerable individuals” in our community, and shared her own past experience of being among those at risk.
Violet Affleck shared, “In 2019, I developed a health issue following a viral infection. I’ve recovered since then, but my experience showed me that medicine doesn’t always have solutions for the after-effects of even common viruses. The COVID-19 pandemic has made this reality more apparent.”
A recent high school graduate spoke about the challenging effects of long-term COVID, without mentioning which specific illness they had experienced.
Approximately 10% of COVID-19 infections result in “long COVID,” a debilitating condition affecting both neurological and cardiovascular systems. This illness can rob individuals of their ability to work productively, see clearly, move freely, and even impair their cognitive functions. – Affleck (speaking at a rapid pace due to time constraints)
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the effects of Long COVID can last anywhere from weeks to years following a COVID-19 infection. Commonly experienced symptoms include exhaustion, difficulty focusing or thinking clearly (referred to as “brain fog”), and worsening of symptoms after physical activity (known as “post-exertional malaise”).
To deal with the prolonged COVID-19 issue, she urged the authorities to take steps such as providing masks, improving air filtration systems, and installing sterilizing far-UVC lights in public buildings, including prisons and detention centers. Additionally, she supported reinstating mask requirements in county healthcare facilities.
“It’s crucial that we increase the accessibility of complimentary diagnostic tests and therapies. Moreover, the county should stand against implementing mask bans for any purpose. Mask bans don’t enhance safety; instead, they endanger vulnerable individuals and hinder community engagement in Los Angeles.”
After a demonstration in support of Palestinians took place outside Adas Torah synagogue in Pico-Robertson, Los Angeles on June 23rd, Bass expressed her thoughts about possibly limiting the usage of masks during protests. However, at a press conference held later that week, she reconsidered her stance, stating, “Currently, we believe such a restriction may not pass legal review.”
North Carolina legislators enacted a mask prohibition at protests in June, allowing for exceptions based on health concerns. The new law came about due in part to university protests over the Gaza conflict, as reported by the Associated Press.)
