It’s wild – Vince Vaughn actually went back in time in that movie! But now, the rest of us in Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice are getting a glimpse of what’s ahead, which is pretty cool.
The new Hulu movie, Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice, stars Kevin Vaughn and James Marsden alongside Eiza González. The film follows their characters through a chaotic and violent night, made even more complex by the sudden appearance of a time machine. It’s an R-rated action-comedy featuring Vaughn’s signature quick wit.
BenDavid Grabinski, who wrote and directed the movie, recently told Slashfilm that he doesn’t plan on making a sequel. He explained that he wanted the film to stand on its own and that he put all his creative energy into making it exactly as he envisioned. While he admits he could change his mind someday, he didn’t want to consider a sequel during the making of the first film, as he feared it would diminish the story.
Some viewers might think the film’s ending leaves things unresolved, but Grabinski doesn’t believe that’s the case – and this article won’t reveal any plot details. He explains that the movie provides everything needed to understand Mike will ultimately resolve the issues, even if we don’t actually see him do it. Grabinski feels the emotional resolution the film does offer is satisfying enough.
He confirmed that a sequel isn’t impossible. He’d be open to it if Grabinski came up with a great story, but he admitted he didn’t plan beyond the immediate future while making the first movie, saying, “I was completely focused on getting through each step as it came.”
Filming was challenging primarily due to complex logistical issues. Coordinating the movie was particularly difficult because of the character Nick, played by Vaughn. Adding a time machine to the plot created even more complexity, as it meant having two versions of Nick – one living in the present and another from the future.
Whenever both Nicks appeared in the same scene, the crew had to decide which version – past or future – Vaughn would portray. His stand-in would then dress and act like the other Nick, and they’d film all of that Nick’s scenes before switching and doing it again from the other Nick’s perspective.
With so many changes to actors, costumes, and characters, keeping everything consistent during filming was a huge challenge, which explains why Grabinski preferred to work on the movie in stages.
The movie Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice has received a positive score of 78% on Rotten Tomatoes. One critic described it as a very enjoyable film that successfully combines exciting action with humorous dialogue.
Vince Vaughn’s new film can be streamed on Hulu and Disney+.
