Viggo Mortensen and Elijah Wood are both open to returning to The Lord of the Rings

As a die-hard fan of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings saga, I cannot contain my excitement over the latest addition to the franchise: “The Hunt for Gollum.” Having grown up with Peter Jackson’s iconic adaptations, I have lived and breathed Middle-earth for decades. The announcement that a new movie is in production, based on material from the appendices in the back of Tolkien’s original books, feels like a dream come true.

A new “Lord of the Rings” film titled “The Hunt for Gollum” is now in production, led by Peter Jackson. This project is drawn from the supplementary material at the end of J.R.R. Tolkien’s original “Lord of the Rings” books. For Jackson, this is his seventh film within the franchise; his most recent being “The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies” in 2014.

The aging fellowship is coming back together for “The Hunt for Gollum.” Director and star Andy Serkis returns as Gollum, with Peter Jackson producing. No definitive information has been released regarding other cast members. However, given that Aragorn is expected to be involved in the plot, which involves Gandalf and Aragorn tracking down Gollum as depicted early in the tale, it’s reasonable to assume that Viggo Mortensen will likely rejoin the cast to reprise his role.

More recently, Mortensen spoke about the upcoming film and expressed his openness to reprising his role as Aragorn. He shared with GQ, “Why not? I don’t have all the details yet – I haven’t been informed about the plot. Maybe I will find out eventually.” He added, “I enjoyed playing that character and learned a lot from it.”

In the tale of “The Hunt for Gollum,” he would come back only if it aligned with the narrative. He seems unenthusiastic about making mere appearances without significance.

“I would only do it if I was right for it in terms of, you know, the age I am now and so forth. I would only do it if I was right for the character. It would be silly to do it otherwise.”

In a more current conversation with THR, Mortensen emphasized the significance of a strong screenplay. “A good script is my top priority, but if I’m financially struggling and need a job, then any script becomes valuable.”

It’s certain that Aragorn’s return would generate significant excitement. Unlike characters like Legolas and Gandalf who have been present in the franchise through “The Hobbit” films, Aragorn has been absent since “The Return of the King,” which was over twenty years ago. Could “The Hunt for Gollum” be the ideal film for this long-awaited reunion? We’ll find out in due course.

Viggo Mortensen and Elijah Wood are both open to returning to The Lord of the Rings

Elijah Wood, the actor who portrayed Frodo in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, expressed his willingness to reprise the role to JoBlo in a recent interview.

It would be pretty incredible. I have to say, any return to New Zealand to work with those individuals within the context of that world would be…jumping back into a world that’s so beloved and means so much to me. So yeah, it would be awesome.

The Hunt for Gollum doesn’t have a release date yet. It is expected to premiere in 2026.
