Viewership for The Rings of Power season 2 far lower than for season 1, according to early numbers

As a seasoned gamer and binge-watcher, I’ve seen my fair share of epic sagas unfold on the small screen. The Rings of Power has been one such journey that I’ve eagerly embarked upon since its debut. However, as a data-driven individual who values facts and figures, the recent drop in viewership for season 2 has piqued my curiosity.

But who cares what we think? How many people are watching the series? The most reliable measure of viewership comes from Nielsen, which releases viewership ratings about a month after a show airs, using all that lead time to make sure their numbers are correct, I imagine. But Deadline has numbers from SambaTV, which is hooked into 1.8 million households. According to them, the first three episodes of The Rings of Power season 2 (which were released all at once) were watched by 902,000 U.S. households within the first four days of release. That’s down from 1.8 million households that tuned into the first three episodes of season 1 over that same timeframe when they released back in 2022.

There are some caveats worth mentioning, like that SambaTV doesn’t include mobile watching, which is always becoming a bigger part of the streaming pie. But still, a decline of 50% isn’t good.

One important thing to note is that we can’t definitively say these figures are 100% precise, as only Amazon has access to accurate data. They share such information at their own discretion. However, based on what they’ve revealed, the premiere of The Rings of Power appears to have attracted the largest audience for a Prime Video series so far, and it seems likely that this record remains unbroken

Will the viewership for The Rings of Power season 2 continue to grow as it progresses, or could it fade into obscurity? It’s important to mention that a third season hasn’t been confirmed yet, although the creators may be setting up the foundation. The show is known for its high production costs; if Amazon isn’t satisfied with the ratings, might they decide to terminate the project?

It may be up to you! New episodes of The Rings of Power drop Thursdays on Prime Video.
