Viewers are there, the game isn’t: Dota 2 meta is stale, says the data

The enduring popularity of one specific esport seems to be holding strong, yet questions linger about its future. The recent addition of Ringmaster to Dota 2 has left the gaming community disgruntled, and this issue can be traced back to an older game update.

Over the course of three updates in Dota 2’s patch 7.38, we’ve seen the competitive landscape emerge with a distinct trend of which characters excel and which don’t. Previously, these patches were highly appreciated by players due to their wide range of possibilities they introduced.

Previously, there were many heroes who had flaws, yet games remained exciting due to various strategies being employed. It was not uncommon to witness unexpected champions like Meepo or Pudge in a tournament, which added excitement and served as an innovative reaction to a dominant hero. However, that dynamic has changed now.

Reddit user u/PGzNick posted an observation about the recent three professional tournaments: a significant number of heroes (over 30) were neither chosen nor prohibited in these events. Remarkably, heroes like Rubick, Pudge, Arc Warden, and even Phantom Lancer – who received buffs in patches 7.38 and 7.38b but were overlooked – were seldom seen during Fissure Special, ESL One Raleigh, and PGL Wallachia Season 4.

What’s the state of the Dota 2 meta as of May 2025?

It’s not just the count of unselected and unused champions that should raise concerns. Each update introduces overpowered choices, and it’s expected to see trends. However, when specific champions consistently stay in the limelight for extended periods, strategic diversity dwindles. You essentially need to select them or risk falling behind.

In February, Update 7.38, known as Wandering Waters, introduced a revamped map system intended to bring some excitement. However, it was none other than Ringmaster who grabbed everyone’s attention when he entered Captain’s Draft, debuting with two fresh abilities. He became the most chosen hero in two out of the last three tournaments and made it into the top three picks for the PGL Wallachia Season 4 tournament.

Here are some of the most picked or banned heroes in the current Dota 2 meta:

  • Ancient Apparition: A late-game powerhouse. His new facet, Bone Chilling, reduces enemy strength and counters many meta core picks.
  • Jakiro: Provides strong teamfight control thanks to his new Ice Path facet. Also excels in lane harassment.
  • Tinker: Now played as a support, but still dominates in net worth. With the Repair Bots facet, he provides massive sustain using March of the Machines.
  • Templar Assassin: A top choice for hard carries. Templar Assassin thrives in the current meta by exploiting efficient farming patterns and dealing huge damage. While both facets are viable, most pros opt for Voidblades for area of effect (AoE) armor reduction and bonus damage.
  • Tiny: The definition of versatility. He can fill any role and perform well. If the enemy team doesn’t have Ancient Apparition, grabbing the Insurmountable facet grants him bonus status resistance and slows based on strength.

Has the stale meta affected viewership?

not necessarily. Certain Reddit posts suggested ESL One Raleigh 2025 indicated that “Dota” is dying once more. However, this perspective overlooks a crucial aspect: the North American time zone is not favorable for European viewers, which likely accounts for the smaller viewership numbers.

From where I stand as a devoted fan, PGL Wallachia Season 4 was just a hair’s breadth away from shattering the viewership record established in Season 1. Esports Charts reported that the grand final drew nearly 400,000 viewers simultaneously – an impressive figure for a game boasting monthly Tier 1 events.

Even though Valve has a devoted fanbase, they should never underestimate their audience’s loyalty. Many gamers claim that observing Dota 2 is more entertaining than playing it, possibly because of the current state of the game’s meta. The game remains dynamic with map expansions and new features, making it visually appealing while also increasing its complexity for novice players.

As more and more once-revered champions are being manipulated excessively in professional tournaments, it may be wise to implement a game balance adjustment earlier rather than later.

Upcoming Tier 1 Dota 2 competition is BLAST Slam III, an action-packed tournament featuring a straight knockout format without a lower bracket, followed by a one-day group stage filled with best-of-one (single elimination) matches, and much more excitement! Keep an eye out for the latest news on this thrilling event.
