Vesemir actor Kim Bodnia’s reps explain why he isn’t in The Witcher season 4
As a seasoned gamer and avid follower of The Witcher series, I can’t help but feel a twinge of nostalgia as we approach the fourth season. Vesemir, played by the charismatic Kim Bodnia, has been an integral part of the show since its inception, and his absence will undoubtedly leave a void.
Currently, Netflix is almost wrapping up production on the fourth season of its fantasy series The Witcher, which features monster hunting. This stage in the show’s lifecycle holds significant weight, not only for what happens on screen but also behind it. In terms of the plot, season 4 signifies a critical moment as the story approaches its climax, culminating with a fifth and concluding season scheduled for filming in 2025. Actor Liam Hemsworth has stepped into the role of Geralt of Rivia following Henry Cavill’s departure from the series after its third season.
In addition to Geralt, other characters in ‘The Witcher’ season 4 may have changed appearances. Last week, it was reported that Kim Bodnia, who portrayed Geralt’s mentor Vesemir in season 2, will not be reprising his role for the series. This is significant as Bodnia is known for his role in ‘Killing Eve’. Moreover, since season 4 is based on the novel ‘Baptism of Fire’, where Vesemir isn’t present, this news isn’t surprising. However, it was mentioned that the upcoming season will include additional scenes with the Kaer Morhen witchers, featuring a new actor playing Vesemir alongside returning guest stars Paul Bullion and Zates Atour as Lambert and Coen respectively.
Until this point, whispers about Bodnia leaving the series have been unsubstantiated, despite compelling evidence. However, we now have an official statement from Bodnia’s representatives to Radio Times that clarifies why the actor won’t be returning to The Witcher. Essentially, it boils down to scheduling issues. According to their statement, “Kim will not reprise his role as Vesemir because his shooting schedule didn’t align with Netflix’s filming timeline for The Witcher season 4.
What scheduling conflict prevented Kim Bodnia from being in The Witcher season 4?
It was discovered that the scheduling issue arose due to the fact that Bodnia is also committed to Apple TV+’s racing movie, titled “F1,” in which he co-stars with Brad Pitt, Kerry Condon, Javier Bardem, Tobias Menzies, and Sarah Niles. The production of “F1” requires specific filming conditions, as certain scenes must be filmed during actual F1 Grand Prix racing weekends to incorporate authentic racing footage into the movie. Consequently, Bodnia faced limited availability to work on both “F1” and “The Witcher.
Initially, Bodnia was intended to appear in both F1 and The Witcher season 4. However, due to Hollywood writers and actors strikes in 2023, studios had to adjust their filming schedules. Consequently, Bodnia could no longer be a part of The Witcher, meaning we’ll meet a new Vesemir when season 4 premieres. This change might align well with the narrative the show could use to explain Geralt’s altered appearance in the new season.
For now, there’s plenty happening within the realm of The Witcher universe. In February of 2025, Netflix will debut an animated film titled The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep, with Doug Cockle reprising his iconic voice role as Geralt of Rivia. Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski has also concluded a new Witcher novel, scheduled for release in Poland this December. Additionally, CD Projekt Red continues development on their next Witcher video game, known as Polaris. As for the anticipated debut of Hemsworth as Geralt and Bodnia’s replacement as Vesemir, I would estimate it to be sometime between mid-to-late 2025.
