Vera’s Kenny Doughty returning to screens in first role since quitting show

Actor Kenny Doughty, known for playing roles on Vera, is making a comeback on TV with this new role marking his first appearance since departing from the heartwarming ITV crime series.

In the upcoming thriller titled “The Au Pair“, we find Doughty reprising his role, this time alongside Brenda Blethyn’s character, where he plays DC Aiden Healy, a police detective.

Starting in March, Channel 5 will debut a new series where you’ll see Tom Doughty sharing screen time with the iconic David Suchet from Agatha Christie’s Poirot.

In the show, we follow Zoe Dalton, previously known as Sally Bretton from “Death in Paradise,” who resides in an idyllic English countryside home together with her spouse Chris (Doughty) and their stepchildren.

Zoe’s life experiences a significant shift as her neighbor, George (Suchet), who has diabetes, moves in next door. To help manage her household, she employs Sandrine (Ludmilla Makowski from Lupin), a French au pair whose true intentions for the job might not be entirely altruistic.

Cast for the series is rounded out by Virginie Ledoyen and Clodagh Moriarty.

In the most recent installment of Vera’s 2023 Christmas special, titled “The Rising Tide”, Doughty portrayed the character DC Healy.

The actor described it as a “prolonged farewell” because, contrary to his original plan to depart after the first four episodes in early 2023, he decided to stick around for the festive special instead.

In simple terms, Doughty clarified that his decision to retire from the police force stemmed from his affection for the character Vera, yet he expressed a desire to delve into different acting opportunities.

He shared with Radio Times in December 2023 that it’s now been nine years since he filmed his first episode back in 2014, which aired the following year in 2015. He mentioned he was considering leaving because he was still content with everything.

Leaving was a tremendously challenging choice for me, as I deeply cherished my role there and held great affection for every member of the Vera team.

A small voice within me suggested, ‘Perhaps it’s time to take a break and relish the moment’, implying I should quit for now and pursue fresh acting opportunities.

The Au Pair will air on Channel 5 from March 10.
