Vera’s Brenda Blethyn responds to spin-off rumours

As a dedicated Vera fan, I must admit that Brenda Blethyn‘s words about a potential spin-off or prequel have left me feeling rather blue. The thought of a world without her portrayal of Vera Stanhope is almost unbearable. However, I can understand her perspective as a seasoned actress with a family to attend to.

Actress Brenda Blethyn, who plays Vera, has expressed thoughts on the concept of a sequel or prequel series taking over when the primary show concludes.

The 14th season, consisting mainly of limited specials, marks the end of ITV’s charming crime drama series, Vera. Although there has been no news about further tales set in the Vera universe, Brenda Blethyn expresses reluctance about the prospect.

“Some people have asked if there’s going to be a prequel. Personally, I don’t think they ever work,” she said (via What to Watch).

I adored ‘Morse’ and appreciated ‘Endeavour’, its predecessor, but I couldn’t find a connection between the two series. They seemed more like an opportunity to create a period drama rather than a continuation of a storyline. The same goes for the prequel to ‘Prime Suspect’, titled ‘Prime Suspect 1973’.

Recently, Blethyn expressed her intention to focus more on her family, stating her desire to step back from the widely-acclaimed show.

She mentioned that it was a tough choice, and by March, which is usually when she prepares to return, she might find herself shedding tears instead.

Even though I cherished every moment of it, I have a deep-rooted obligation towards my family at home. It struck me that I haven’t spent a single summer with them in the last 14 years.

Blethyn mentioned that he returned for another series since he found it hard to leave, but ultimately, it was the right time for that.

Following the last two episodes involving Detective Inspector Joe Ashworth’s predicament, ITV plans to air a documentary titled “Vera: Farewell Pet“, delving into the series’ impact and its role in shaping British crime dramas.

On Wednesday, January 1, 2025, Vera will make her appearance on ITV1 and ITVX at 8 pm. Meanwhile, the special episode “Vera: Farewell Pet” will air on ITV1 at 9 pm on Friday, January 3.
