As a long-time fan of Vera and Brenda Blethyn’s captivating portrayal of the strong-willed detective, I must admit that her decision to leave the series leaves me with a bittersweet feeling. On one hand, it’s heartening to know that she values her family life enough to take a break after 14 years of dedication to the show. However, on the other hand, I can’t help but feel a pang of regret at the thought of missing out on more Vera Stanhope mysteries set against the beautiful Northumberland landscape.
Vera star Brenda Blethyn has shared the real reason why she has left the ITV show.
The long-running ITV crime series will conclude in January with two final episodes, marking the end of a 14-year run and leaving fans to bid farewell to beloved detective Vera Stanhope.
In her own words, Blethyn disclosed that she was choosing to prioritize her family by stepping away from the show.

She mentioned that it was a tough choice, and by March, which is usually when she prepares to return, she might be tears. (paraphrased from The Sun)
Although I cherished every moment of it, my family at home is my top priority, and I came to realize that I haven’t spent a summer with them in 14 years.
Blethyn mentioned that he returned for another series since he found it hard to leave, but ultimately, it was the right moment to do so.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but share my excitement following Blethyn’s recent hints about the upcoming finale. It seems we’re in for some turbulence involving none other than Detective Inspector Joe Ashworth!

On the third of January, a documentary titled “Vera: Farewell Pet” that wraps up the show will be aired.
The special will examine the lasting charm and significant influence that the series has had on both its viewers and actors involved.
This documentary is going to chronicle the exceptional voyage of “Vera” and its enduring impact on British crime dramas. It will be presented against the breathtaking scenery of Northumberland, where the environment takes on a role as a character itself, serving as tribute to the show’s impressive heritage.
Come January 1st, 2025, I’ll be back on your screens at 8pm on both ITV1 and ITVX. And if you’re eager for more, tune in to ITV1 on the 3rd of January at 9pm for a special titled “Vera: Farewell Pet.” Happy gaming and see you then!
