Venom: The Last Dance could retcon Thor: Love and Thunder

As a longtime Marvel enthusiast and comic book aficionado, I must say that the upcoming developments in the Venom and Spider-Man series have me absolutely buzzing with excitement! The rumors of Knull’s involvement in both Venom 3 and the next Spider-Man film, potentially titled “Spider-Man: King in Black,” are music to my ears.

In the upcoming movie “Venom: The Last Dance,” audiences will get acquainted with the much-adored Marvel villain Knull, also known as the King in Black. Although relatively new to the Marvel Comics universe, Knull has quickly gained a strong fan following. It’s possible that his appearance in the Venom film could be intertwined with another iconic Marvel villain – Gorr the God Butcher.

In 2022, I found myself at the heart of the controversy surrounding “Thor: Love and Thunder” within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Unlike my comic book version, Gorr, the character I embodied, had a backstory altered to exclude Knull.

With Knull making his live-action debut imminently, could it be that his appearance alters Gorr’s backstory in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? To put it another way, might Knull’s introduction modify the origin of the weapon that Gorr used in Thor: Love and Thunder?

Gorr’s Marvel Comics and MCU origins, explained

In issue number 2 of Jason Aaron’s popular series ‘Thor: God of Thunder,’ published in January 2013, the enigmatic character Gorr The God Butcher made a complete debut. Initially, the details of his background were unclear, but when Thor and his companions encountered him during an earlier confrontation in Norse history, they quickly became aware of his infamous status.

Previously, Thor had never encountered an adversary as formidable as Gorr, who effortlessly decimated his comrades and even murdered some deities during battle. Before long, Thor was overpowered and subjected to cruel torment at the hands of this fearsome foe. However, he managed to break free and sever one of Gorr’s limbs. With his allies weakened, they feared that Gorr wouldn’t survive such injuries.

For the remainder of the initial tale, we find Thor joining forces with both his former and upcoming selves to confront and vanquish Gorr permanently. The antagonist intended to detonate a divine bomb, which would simultaneously eliminate every deity throughout the cosmos and the fabric of time.

Despite his wicked nature, Gorr’s past is deeply marked by suffering and sorrow. Originally hailing from an unnamed, desolate planet inhabited by fanatical worshippers of various deities, Gorr himself was one of them. He witnessed the demise of his mother, wife, and eventually his children. All his life, he was indoctrinated to believe in the gods they revered, with the promise that their pain would be redeemed in the end.

When others listened to him, they labeled him a blasphemer and exiled him, leaving him to traverse his desolate home planet on his own. On his journey, Gorr stumbled upon two deities engaged in combat (one cloaked in black and the other radiant gold). The golden-robed god was gravely injured, and pleaded with Gorr for assistance, but Gorr, enraged that this god would ask for help when they had begged for aid daily and received none, instead slew the golden-robed deity. As a result, the black-clad god’s armor and weapon fell to its fallen master. From that day onwards, Gorr vowed to eradicate all gods across the cosmos – and with his newly acquired might, he could do so.

As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but share my thoughts on the portrayal of Gorr the God Butcher in Marvel Cinematic Universe’s ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’. The adaptation stayed fairly true to his comic book roots, with some subtle alterations here and there. However, one significant change was evident – unlike the comics, Gorr’s weapon didn’t stem from the same origins.

Knull’s origin, explained

In the Marvel Universe, we have come to know a powerful entity called Knull, also recognized as The Symbiote God and The King in Black. Introduced by Donny Cates during his significant run on the Venom series (issue #3), Knull was born long before the conventional creation of the Marvel Universe, millions of years ago. While he lay dormant in the seemingly endless blackness of his universe, the Celestials, beings of godlike status, arrived and started crafting their own universe. Infuriated by their audacity, Knull attempted to eliminate them, but was defeated after a brief conflict. Remarkably, Knull managed to survive this encounter.

Knull, in his loss, crafted a deadly weapon known as All-Black the Necro-Sword. This was the original symbiote and forefather of creatures like Venom. With this blade, Knull decapitated one of the Celestials. Although the Celestials managed to establish their universe, Knull hatched a millennia-long plan. He spawned a race of beings reminiscent of his weapon, whose purpose was to contaminate and possess the mortals created by the Celestials. This way, Knull intended to restore his previous universe, which had been shrouded in darkness before the emergence of the Celestials, back to its original state of total blackness.

Millennia hence, Knull would engage in a fierce fight with deities clad in golden armor. In this encounter, both Knull and one of the gods sustained grievous injuries while crashing onto a barren planet. As the battle raged, an isolated human figure stumbled upon the gods. Enraged by the scene, this human killed Knull’s adversary, leaving Knull too weak to prevent the human from snatching his sword. This mortal who ended the god’s life was none other than Gorr, the God Butcher.

In a turn of events, Gorr took possession of Knull’s weapon. Following Gorr’s downfall at the hands of Thor, it was destined that Knull would reclaim his weapon. The intriguing aspect about Knull’s inception is that he was initially conceptualized by Jason Aaron during his tenure on Thor in 2013. However, Donny Cates expanded upon Knull’s backstory and provided him with a name and origin through his work on Venom in 2018. In essence, both Jason Aaron and Donny Cates can claim credit for the creation of Knull, although Aaron did not delve into his origins or give him a name.

As a dedicated Marvel gamer, I can’t help but get excited about the upcoming showdown with Knull, the main antagonist of Donny Cates’ Venom run. This cosmic menace is poised to become a universe-wide threat in the epic crossover event, King in Black. It’s going to be a massive showdown, but I’ve got faith that an empowered Venom will rise to the challenge and defeat Knull during that crossover. His influence might be vanquished, but his legacy is sure to linger on. Fans have been eagerly waiting for him to make his live-action debut, and finally, it’s happening in Venom: The Last Dance.

What could happen to Knull after Venom 3, and will it change Gorr’s origins?

As a die-hard fan, I’ve noticed a pattern in the Venom film series – the main villains are usually defeated and dispatched by the end of their stories, like Riot and Carnage. However, it seems that things might be different with Knull, who is rumored to make an appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe following his debut in Venom 3. Intriguingly, there are whispers suggesting that he could play a significant role in the next Tom Holland Spider-Man film. Moreover, with more rumors pointing towards Tom Hardy’s Venom being part of this project, it’s premature to write off the possibility that Knull could be involved too.

Indeed, it’s just speculation at this point that Knull will be part of Spider-Man 4, but if true, the upcoming Tom Holland Spider-Man movie is rumored to be called Spider-Man: King in Black. This title seems to hint towards Knull, suggesting that the next Spiderman film could explore a multiverse, much like Spider-Man: No Way Home did.

Although it’s uncertain if Tom Hardy’s Venom will reappear after his latest movie, there might be a scene at the end of the credits hinting at the symbiote joining the main Marvel Cinematic Universe. This could occur with or without Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy), and only time will tell for sure. If it does happen, both Marvel and Sony are likely to figure out a way to make this crossover possible.

Could the introduction of Knull in the Marvel Cinematic Universe potentially modify the existing backstories of Gorr the God Butcher to align more closely with the comic book version? Given that fans weren’t entirely satisfied with the alterations to these origins, despite the captivating and convincing portrayal by Christian Bale.

When Gorr debuted in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the Necro Sword didn’t have connections to Knull or its symbiotic origins as depicted in the comics. However, if Knull is indeed set to appear in the MCU, these ties could be established by Marvel Studios. Given that Thor: Love and Thunder wasn’t well-received, the studio might consider altering Gorr’s backstory within the MCU to link it with Venom and Knull, who are rumored to feature in upcoming MCU projects such as the next Spider-Man film.

Only time will tell.
