As a longtime comic book enthusiast and avid fan of the Venom franchise, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and anticipation for “Venom: The Last Dance.” Having followed Eddie Brock’s journey since the first film, it’s fascinating to see how far he’s come from being a disgraced journalist to becoming a symbiote-fused antihero.
Get ready for “Venom: The Final Showdown” in cinemas soon! But, if you’re wondering about the events of the previous movie, here’s a brief summary!
The Venom film franchise kicked off in 2018 with the fittingly named Venom, marking the sole successful live-action venture so far by Sony in their endeavor to create a movie universe similar to the Spider-Man world called the “Spider-Verse.” This series benefits from featuring one of Spiderman’s most well-known adversaries, although whether this character can truly be labeled as an “enemy” is up for debate.
In the initial movie, the storyline revolves around Eddie Brock, a former reporter with a tarnished reputation, who unintentionally houses an extraterrestrial being. This fearsome entity bestows Eddie with extraordinary abilities and talents, forming an unusual duo that eventually thwarts another symbiote invasion.
The movie was a massive hit and ended with Eddie heading to an interview with imprisoned serial killer Cletus Kasady (Woody Harrelson). That set up the sequel Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

In an interview, Eddie was bitten by Cletus. This bite exposed him to some alien blood, causing a transformation in Cletus into the sinister symbiote Carnage. His former lover, Frances Barrison (portrayed by Naomie Harris), was freed from confinement and, due to her powerful sonic scream, she too became infected and is now infamously known as Shriek. Together, they waged a violent rampage, with Eddie attempting to put a stop to their destructive actions.
The situation became more complex due to Eddie and Venom’s disagreement over Venom’s aggressive behavior and the symbiote temporarily departing from Eddie. Eventually, Eddie’s ex-partner Anne (played by Michelle Williams) managed to convince the symbiote to reconnect with Eddie. Simultaneously, Detective Patrick Mulligan (portrayed by Stephen Graham) attempted to intervene but found himself in a massive fight between Venom and Carnage inside a church.
Eventually, Venom successfully utilized Shriek to split Cletus and his symbiote apart, allowing Venom to consume Carnage and eliminate Kasady. Tragically, Shriek perished in the falling church ruins. Mulligan managed to survive, though his eyes began to glow a eerie blue, suggesting that he might have been exposed to a symbiote in some way.
During the mid-credits scene, the duo found themselves at a tropical resort, where Venom demonstrated additional powers to Brock. Just as they watched a television broadcast of J. Jonah Jameson revealing Peter Parker’s identity as Spider-Man (an occurrence from the Marvel Cinematic Universe film “Spider-Man: Far From Home”), they were abruptly transported to another universe. Venom uttered, “This guy,” and it became clear that they had now entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
As a hardcore gamer, I’d rephrase it like this: In the final moments of 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, Eddie and Venom were chatting it up in a bar about their multiverse differences. Suddenly, they blinked out, back to their home turf – all thanks to a spell cast by Doctor Strange in that film. Little did they know, a piece of the extraterrestrial symbiote was left behind.
What does this mean for Venom: The Last Dance?
While some viewers might have felt let down because Venom wasn’t involved in the major showdown in Spider-Man: No Way Home, it appears this was mainly due to the challenges of production scheduling. The upcoming third Venom film, however, is slated as the conclusion of the series. Although it may not directly address the events of the MCU movie (though anything’s possible), it won’t overlook the fact that Eddie and Venom are on the run from the authorities.
According to the trailer, Venom and Eddie find themselves pursued by both the military and an alien menace. The military threat has been brewing for some time against the unruly duo, but the extraterrestrial danger may well be their toughest test yet. The trailer hints that this conflict could be connected to the symbiote that possessed Detective Patrick Mulligan in the last film.
The upcoming film promises an even grander scale than any prior installment in the franchise, as the main characters embark on a high-stakes chase, resulting in humorous escapades involving a horse. Additionally, they encounter the infamous villain Knull, who is said to be the ruler of the symbiotes.
In a grand finale for this trilogy, it’s clear that Venom is all set to make an exit with a dark and intense flair, leaving fans eagerly anticipating the spectacle.
