Velma axed by Max after two seasons

As a seasoned gamer and animated series enthusiast who grew up with the original Scooby-Doo mysteries, I must admit that I was initially intrigued by the premise of Velma. However, my excitement quickly waned as the show deviated further from its beloved roots, much like a well-meaning but misguided ghost trying to scare you with a haunted broom instead of a classic spooky apparition.

As a devoted fan, I’m saddened to share that our beloved adult-animated comedy-horror series, Velma, won’t be back for another season. Unfortunately, the production team has decided to part ways with it, which essentially means that Velma has been officially taken off the air.

Here’s an official statement from Max about the show’s cancellation via Variety:

Over the past two seasons, Mindy [Kaling] and Charlie [Grandy] have created an incredibly fun and fresh world within the iconic whodunit franchise. While we won’t be moving forward with another season of the series, we thank them for their compelling coming-of-age storytelling, unrivaled clues, and hilarious hijinks.

Charlie Grandy, known from “The Office” and “The Mindy Project,” conceived and produced a series titled “Velma.” The narrative revolved around Velma Dinkley’s backstory, delving into her life before joining the Mystery Inc. group. Characters such as Fred, Shaggy (Norville), and Daphne were also present in this show, representing the early versions of the Mystery Inc. team. Interestingly, unlike previous shows in the franchise, “Velma” did not feature Scooby-Doo.

In the adult-animated show, viewers followed Velma and her team as they unraveled mysteries set in Crystal Cove. Emmy-winning actress Mindy Kaling lent her voice to the lead character, Velma Dinkley. Alongside her, Glenn Howerton, Sam Richardson, and Constance Wu provided voices for key roles. The series premiered on Max early this year (2023) and generated much discussion and buzz.

The production garnered a blend of positive and negative feedback from critics, with most viewers expressing disapproval. Many felt disappointed by the substantial shift away from the original mood and aesthetic. Some were dissatisfied with the new character interpretations, while others criticized the writing, mature humor, and darker themes. In fact, there was a strong suggestion among many for others to avoid watching the show in hopes of its termination.

Instead, the plan appeared to have an unexpected outcome as Max chose to renew the adult-animated series for a second season in June 2023. Contrary to expectations, Velma’s season 2 debuted on Max in April 2024. A special Halloween episode named Velma: This Halloween Needs To Be More Special! was made available on the streaming platform on October 3rd.

It seems that the second season of Velma didn’t thrive on Max, as the show has been terminated. Although Max hasn’t provided a specific explanation for canceling the series, it appears that poor viewership may have played a role.

What are your thoughts on Velma‘s cancellation?
