Be warned, there are minor spoilers for the first part of Stranger Things season 5! Jamie Campbell Bower returns as Vecna in the new season, and his appearance has changed a bit. After seemingly being defeated in season 4, Vecna makes a full comeback in the volume 1 finale. He emerges from a gate controlled by the military and attacks with a group of Demogorgons.

Vecna’s costume in the new season, like in season 4, was created by award-winning designer Barrie Gower and his team. This time, however, it looks even more decayed. The Duffer brothers have hinted that Vecna will be far more terrifying this season, describing him as a significantly more powerful version of Freddy Krueger. His abilities will now affect the real world just as strongly as the Upside Down.

In a recent interview with Ash Crossan from ScreenRant, Jamie Campbell Bower, who plays Vecna, talked about his character’s updated appearance in the upcoming fifth season of Stranger Things. Bower explained that Vecna’s new look is a result of the injuries he sustained at the end of season four—specifically, after being attacked and nearly burned by the show’s heroes—and represents his recovery and transformation since then.

His current appearance is due to both the changes he’s undergone and the time he’s spent away from humanity. This isolation has made him bitter and, as a result, his appearance has become increasingly unpleasant, reflecting the harshness of his circumstances.

Bower shared his enthusiasm for Vecna’s updated design, describing the collaboration with Gower and his team as a “joy.” He appreciated their ability to deliver everything the production needed, including adding intricate details and layers to the suit. This attention to detail ensured Vecna had a powerful and imposing presence on set.

For most of the season, we only saw him as Vecna, but the first part of Stranger Things season 4 finally showed us how Henry Creel became the villain. After Eleven sent him to the Upside Down, the strange environment – including its poisonous air and unusual storms – changed him. He began to look more like the Vecna character from Dungeons & Dragons, as Dr. Brenner’s experiments intended.

As Bower suggested, the state Vecna was left in at the end of season 4 heavily influenced his new look in Stranger Things season 5. Not only was he severely burned by gunfire and set ablaze by Nancy, but the Upside Down’s unusual atmosphere would have caused a drastically different healing process, fundamentally changing his physical form.

According to recent comments from the show’s creators, Vecna is beyond redemption heading into the fifth season of Stranger Things. While past villains showed hints of turning away from evil when separated from the Mind Flayer, Vecna appears to have fully embraced a nihilistic worldview, as demonstrated in season four. His new appearance suggests he’s become even more sinister than before, eliminating any hope for a change of heart.
