Vanessa Williams has shared that she kept silent for decades about being sexually abused when she was ten years old, believing her father would struggle to handle the truth.
I was so moved when the actress first shared her incredibly painful story of sexual abuse. She did it in her 2012 memoir, ‘You Have No Idea,’ which she wrote with her mother, Helen Williams, who sadly passed away. It took immense courage, and I’ve admired her ever since.
She described a sexual encounter that occurred while on vacation in California with friends and family acquaintances, stating an 18-year-old woman performed oral sex on her.
Vanessa was thinking about telling her parents what had happened, but first she learned some terrible news: her uncle had passed away, and her dad was heartbroken.
Not wanting to add to her familyās suffering, the actress from Desperate Housewives kept what happened to her a secret for years, feeling she couldnāt share it with anyone.
In a conversation with Jamie Laing on his Great Company podcast, she discussed how common it was for people of that generation to experience abuse and then keep it secret for many years.
Vanessa thought back to that time and admitted it was a different era. While she didn’t want to excuse what happened, she felt sad knowing so many others had gone through similar experiences. It was truly devastating.
As a parent, it was something I didn’t even talk about until after my father died. When my mother and I later co-wrote a book, she explained that my father wouldn’t have been able to cope with it. That’s because fathers naturally want to protect their children.
She continued, recalling the event: ‘It happened while I was getting off the plane in California. I was traveling with a friend and their family’s friends.’
I returned home to find my uncle had passed away. I remember seeing my dad looking incredibly pale, and I immediately knew something was terribly wrong. They told us his brother had died.
I didn’t even have a chance to process what happened or explain that I was upset. It just suddenly became real, and I immediately decided not to mention it at all. I just completely pushed it aside and tried to ignore it.
It’s generally best to avoid sharing personal issues with your parents, especially if you don’t have a very close relationship. It can be difficult to discuss anything out of the ordinary with them.
In a 2014 interview on Oprah’s Master Class, Vanessa shared details about a difficult summer, explaining that she initially saw her attacker as someone she admired, but understood that the encounter was wrong and inappropriate.
The West End star remembered her as one of those effortlessly cool people who made you feel more mature just by being around her.
I can’t stop thinking about what she told me. It was a night like any other, we were both asleep, and then her older sister just⦠came in. She woke me up and told me to lie on the floor. It was so shocking. She⦠she pulled my pants down and told me to be quiet. And then⦠she did something awful. Iām still trying to process it, honestly. It replays in my head constantly, and it feels so wrong, so⦠violating. I just keep replaying every single detail.
Vanessa said she was too young to fully grasp what had happened, and she felt confused about it.
She admitted she didn’t understand what was happening, but enjoyed the sensation. However, she also realized it was something she shouldn’t be experiencing.
She explained that the experience felt good at the time, leading her to believe it was normal. However, she emphasized that such a situation is absolutely not normal for a child of that age, referring to being seduced.
She didn’t fully understand how serious the event was until she went to college, but it continued to affect her, leading her to become rebellious and distance herself from her parents.
Vanessa explained that experiencing unwanted sexual attention when she was young harmed her sense of innocence and unfortunately led to her having more casual sexual encounters.
The actress, known for her role in ‘Ugly Betty,’ shared honestly that it brought up feelings of attraction at a time when she felt it was inappropriate.
If my life had unfolded differently ā if Iād had a typical teenage romance ā I wouldnāt have carried that lasting sense of shame.
Looking back, I realize it definitely led me to explore my sexuality earlier than I was ready for, and honestly, it encouraged a more open ā and perhaps reckless ā approach to relationships when I was younger. It sparked a curiosity that, in hindsight, could have benefited from a little more maturity.
Vanessa shared with Jamie that after becoming the first Black Miss America in 1983, she and her family received a flood of death threats and hateful letters.
At just 20 years old, she made history as the first Black woman to win the renowned pageant. However, her groundbreaking victory was met with a wave of racist hate.
The actress, known for her role in Desperate Housewives, shared that she entered the pageant circuit on a whim and was shocked when she won. She said the victory at age 20 completely transformed her life.
She shared that immediately after becoming queen, she started receiving death threats. Her parents, wanting to protect her from being scared, didn’t tell her how dangerous the threats were at the time.
Vanessa shared that she started receiving death threats immediately after winning at age 20. She’s grateful that not all of them were revealed to her, as she believes it would have been even more frightening if she had known the full extent.
My parents kept a box full of the threatening letters we received. The FBI was monitoring the situation closely, even warning us about potential dangers when I traveled, like to Chicago. They shielded me from the full extent of the threats, not wanting me to be scared.
Oh my god, it was terrifying! People actually called our house with these horrible threats. They’d scream things like, ‘We’re going to kill her! We know where you live, we’re coming after you!’ It wasn’t just about her winning, it was completely insane. I mean, can you believe people would do that? It was justā¦nuts. I was so worried for her and her family!
Thinking back to how aware she was of the potential danger, she explained that she first noticed something was wrong when she returned home. There was a parade in her small town, and she saw snipers positioned on the rooftops, which struck her as very unusual.
Once, while I was making an appearance in Alabama, I was scheduled to ride in a convertible. But right before we started, they told me they were going to put the top up, which I thought was a bit strange.
I remember being at a motel and being warned not to leave my room without first checking with the person supervising me next door. That made me feel like they weren’t being completely honest and that something dangerous was going on.
As a longtime admirer, it was a little heartbreaking to hear Vanessa say that after all these years ā four decades, to be exact ā she honestly didn’t feel like things had gotten much better. It was a really honest admission, and it definitely resonated with me.
She described the past year as incredibly stressful. While she initially believed they could move forward, she now questions whether any real progress has been made, given the continued presence of racism, prejudice, and the things that upset people. She wonders if everyone can simply embrace the diversity of cultures and backgrounds that exist around them.
Towards the end of her time as Miss America, the winner had to relinquish her crown after private nude photos sheād taken were famously sold and published in Penthouse magazine.
In 1982, photographer Tom Chiapel, her previous employer, sold nude photos he took of her to Penthouse magazine for $50,000 without her permission.
After sponsors threatened to withdraw their support, officials gave Vanessa 72 hours to step down as Miss America. However, she was permitted to keep both her title and the scholarship funds sheād won.
Two months after the initial incident, the artist, who has been nominated for a Grammy eleven times, sued Chiapel and Penthouse publisher Bob Guccione for $500 million. However, she dismissed the lawsuit a year later.
Vanessa remembered the incident on The Jonathan Ross Show from last February, explaining that the photographer who took the pictures didn’t have permission and secretly sold them.
Being betrayed was a painful experience, but it ultimately shaped who I am today. Looking back, I realize I couldn’t have handled the situation any differently.
I’m just so grateful to my parents for always believing in me and being there every step of the way. And honestly, the support from the whole community meant the world ā knowing they had my back and believed I could do it was incredible.
Being only 21, it was overwhelming to have this happen so suddenly, especially with my term ending in just four weeks. It was a lot to handle.
