Vampire Diaries creator still ticked off that The CW canceled her Legacies spinoff

As a dedicated fan and observer of the small screen world, I must say, Julie Plec’s journey with The Vampire Diaries universe has been nothing short of extraordinary. Spanning over 13 years, her creations have captivated audiences worldwide, weaving tales of love, mystery, and supernatural elements that resonate deeply with the human spirit.

Julie Plec managed The CW’s iterations of “The Vampire Diaries” franchise for thirteen years. Initially, the original series, filled with supernatural chaos, ran for eight seasons. Following this, “The Originals,” which introduced vampire-werewolf hybrids, continued for five seasons. Lastly, “Legacies,” blending characters from both series, ran for four seasons before concluding in 2022. Coincidentally, The CW was purchased by Nexstar Media Group around the same time, leading to the removal of most original programming and leaving the network significantly diminished. Despite the backing of CW CEO Mark Pedowitz for the “Vampire Diaries” universe, a new owner often makes changes as they see fit.

Plec expressed some dissatisfaction regarding the decision to cancel the show. He found it hard to believe that after running for 13 years, ‘Vampire Diaries’ wouldn’t continue as long as feasible given the potential for additional spin-offs and storylines.

It was a pretty seminal moment in my career when I realized that often just the unpredictability of the business and the metrics of the business can get in the way of a creative journey, no matter how much people like your show, no matter how much the people who hire you to make it, enjoy the process. If there’s a business reason to let it go, then people let it go. I was kind of sad and surprised at that decision, as was Mark Pedowitz, by the way, very vocally. And wish it didn’t have to happen that way, because Legacies, in particular, I felt like was designed to go on for many, many years, and have new generations of cast come through. It just felt like an incredibly short-sighted missed opportunity all around.

According to The A.V. Club, Legacies attracted approximately 400,000 viewers per week during its first season. This isn’t an impressive figure but neither is it disastrous, particularly given that The CW traditionally relied on shows produced at a low cost, which drew passionate if not massive audiences. Interestingly, The CW was once known for its brand of melodramatic teen series featuring attractive young actors, many of which had supernatural elements. With the majority of their scripted shows gone and an increase in reality programming, it’s unclear what The CW’s identity is today.

A new series titled “We Were Liars” is coming to Amazon Prime Video, inspired by the novel written by E. Lockhart. The synopsis on Google Books has me quite intrigued!

A beautiful and distinguished family.
A private island.
A brilliant, damaged girl; a passionate, political boy.
A group of four friends-the Liars-whose friendship turns destructive.
A revolution.
An accident.
A secret.
Lies upon lies.
True love.
The truth.

The spirit of The CW lives on. There’s no official release date for We Were Liars as of yet.
