Valerie Bertinelli Reveals She ‘Fumbled the Last Good Man’ After Split from Mike Goodnough

In a recent open discussion, Valerie Bertinelli shared insights into some mistakes she encountered in her romantic relationships, not long after parting ways with writer Mike Goodnough in November.

On Monday, the actress who stars in “One Day at a Time” posted an emotional message on Instagram, confessing that her life experiences are shaped by ‘two unsuccessful marriages’. She also admitted candidly, ‘I dropped the ball with the last genuine good man I encountered.’

The actress posted this with a close-up selfie, stating, ‘True transformation doesn’t stem from criticism, embarrassment, or force.’

She went on to say that everyone aspires to improve and feels terrible when they’ve caused pain to someone dear to them. Regret, in the form of shame, clouds our judgment.

Instead, she continued by saying, ‘Isn’t it wonderful if we could free the person we care about from embarrassment, allowing them to genuinely make up for what you seek?’

More than two years have passed since she officially ended her marriage with former husband Tom Vitale, and during this time, her heartfelt message was written.

Before that, she was married to the late Eddie Van Halen from 1981 to 2007. 

In her Instagram post, Bertinelli admitted that overcoming pain and rage can be challenging. However, she proposed that releasing such feelings might pave the way for an apology, restitution, or resolution that one truly deserves.

In 2004, Bertinelli crossed paths with Vitale for the first time. They got engaged in 2010 and tied the knot in January 2011. However, she initiated a legal separation process in November 2021.

At that point, she wrote, ‘Now there’s a lot to be excited about, whereas before it seemed only gloomy, fearful, isolating, and overwhelming.’

Later on, the celebrity clarified that even though she’s unsure about her future, she’s not anxious. Instead, she feels liberated.

Bertinelli had a marriage with Eddie Van Halen that lasted from 1981 until their separation in 2007. Their union produced a son named Wolfgang, who is now 33 years old.

Her most recent Instagram update follows shortly after news broke about her breakup with boyfriend Mike Goodnough, who she had been dating for ten months.

Back in March, the actress mentioned that she was involved in a romantic relationship, without revealing the identity of her partner at first.

During an interview with USA Today, Valerie expressed, “I’ve found someone. I’m extremely thankful for him. This connection is unique – it’s nothing like any relationship I’ve had with a man before.

I’d rather not go into detail, but let me tell you, I consider myself extremely fortunate to have crossed paths with him. It came as quite a surprise!

She hadn’t even crossed my mind before. Living a blissful life with my six cats, a dog, and myself was all I needed. This unexpected turn of events, however, has been a pleasant surprise. I’m thankful it happened, as he is truly remarkable. She went on to express more admiration for him.

In April, she shared with People that Mike, a talented writer, is a decade younger than herself. She further mentioned that he possesses qualities such as maturity, kindness, thoughtfulness, and patience.

During that very same month, they made their relationship public on Instagram and attended a premiere together for the first time, which was in June.

Valerie and Mike faced challenges while maintaining their long-distance romance during their dating period, as she openly acknowledged.

Lately, sources shared with DailyMail.com a warning sign that led Bertinelli to end her relationship, as they believed she worried he was mainly attracted by her celebrity status.

Valerie leaped into a deep commitment with a man who had previously made comments on her social media, a warning sign she perhaps overlooked.

‘The source noted that instead of meeting someone genuinely interested in her, she got mixed up with a fan. It appeared he was more enamored with her celebrity status.’
