Valerie Bertinelli, 65, finally reveals her last words to ex Eddie Van Halen while he was on his death bed six years ago

In her new memoir, Getting Naked: The Quiet Work of Becoming Perfectly Imperfect, Valerie Bertinelli openly shares details about her 20-year marriage to the late Eddie Van Halen.

The actress, now 65, was married to Van Halen for 20 years, from 1981 to 2001, before they divorced in 2007.

Van Halen died in 2020 at age 65 following a stroke and throat cancer battle.

In her new book, released Tuesday, she wrote about her ex-husband, describing him as a genuinely good person with a pure heart. She felt he always strived to do the right thing, and truly was a good man.

Us Weekly reports that Bertinelli remembers her ex-husband’s final words being, ‘madly in love at the beginning.’

She wrote that her last words to him, as he lay dying in the hospital, were “I love you.”

The exes shared son Wolfgang Van Halen, 34.

In her recent interview, Bertinelli revealed that during their last Thanksgiving together, her ex-husband opened up to her, sharing feelings he admitted he should have expressed much sooner.

‘We both did. We found a place of deep love and forgiveness for our past mistakes.’

She first talked about their relationship in May 2024, following the premiere of Wolfgang’s Behind The Music on Paramount+.

She shared with her fans in a video that she’d finally gotten around to watching Wolfie’s ‘Behind the Music’ episode, and admitted it was a difficult experience.

‘I’d stopped it many times because it was just too brutal to watch for many reasons. One, seeing Wolfie’s pain,’ she added.

Looking back, I realize I could have been a better parent, even though my son turned out wonderfully. I definitely made some errors along the way, I have to admit.

The Hot in Cleveland star was 20 when she married the 27-year-old Van Halen guitarist.

She described their marriage as losing all signs of affection and connection. It definitely didn’t feel like a relationship with a soulmate anymore.

After Van Halen passed away, the celebrity confessed her feelings surprised her. ‘I was ready to publicly mourn him as if I were his grieving wife,’ she shared, visibly emotional, ‘even though we hadn’t been together for two decades.’

‘What we had together was this beautiful son that we both unconditionally loved.’

She announced her book in early October.

Bertinelli announced her upcoming book, describing it as a deeply personal collection of essays about life’s experiences – including growing older, relationships, friendship, hidden truths, and learning to accept things as they are. She shared the book’s cover image, calling it a raw and honest look into her heart.

She began by saying she was thrilled – and a little nervous – to finally reveal the cover of her new book, ‘GETTING NAKED’.

She explained that she didn’t fully understand how important writing the book would be until she began. The process was incredibly healing, and she believes she wouldn’t have been able to overcome something personal without it.

I truly hope this encourages you to challenge negative self-talk, prioritize your own well-being, and release any self-judgment or negativity others try to impose on you.
