DC Studios is revisiting the world of V for Vendetta. As James Gunn builds his new DC Universe with projects like “Gods and Monsters”, more details are emerging, including the return of a character last seen in a film back in 2005.
According to Variety, DC Studios is creating a TV series based on “V for Vendetta” for HBO. James Gunn and Peter Safran will be executive producers, and Pete Jackson is writing the adaptation. As of now, Warner Bros. TV, HBO, and DC Studios haven’t made any official statements about the project.
I’m so excited about the new V for Vendetta project! It’s going to be executive produced by Ben Stephenson, who I really admire, alongside Leanne Klein from Wall to Wall Media, which is part of Warner Bros. Television Studios UK. Of course, it’s all based on the incredible comic book series by Alan Moore and David Lloyd from 1982 – a true classic!
Set in a future Britain ruled by the oppressive Norsefire party, the story follows V, a masked vigilante, as he attempts to overthrow the government. After he rescues her from the authorities, Evey Hammond becomes his ally.
The film V for Vendetta earned $134.7 million globally, with a production budget estimated between $50 and $54 million. Hugo Weaving and Natalie Portman starred as the main characters, V and Evey, respectively. James McTeigue directed the movie, based on a screenplay written by the Wachowskis.
The recent DC film was praised by critics, especially considering how few comic book movies there were back then. But this isn’t the first attempt at a V for Vendetta TV show. Back in October 2017, Bleeding Cool reported that Channel 4 was considering a series, but the project never actually happened.
Because of the story’s direction, the HBO drama will likely exist outside of the main DC Universe being created by James Gunn. It’s expected to be a separate story, similar to how Matt Reeves’ The Batman created its own world and led to the The Penguin series on HBO.
