Upcoming Star Wars: Legacy of Vader explores Kylo Ren’s struggles
As a die-hard Star Wars fan who has spent countless hours dissecting every frame of the saga, I am beyond excited about Marvel’s upcoming comic book series, Star Wars: Legacy of Vader! Having followed Kylo Ren’s transformation since The Rise of Kylo Ren, I can’t wait to see where Charles Soule takes this complex character next.
Curious about Kylo Ren’s storyline between “The Last Jedi” and “The Rise of Skywalker”? Marvel’s upcoming comic book series, “Star Wars: Legacy of Vader,” may provide some insights. Penned by Charles Soule and beautifully illustrated by Luke Ross, this new series delves into the depths of Ben Solo’s mind during a particularly tumultuous time in his life.
According to a recent report by IGN, Soule – who has experience in the Star Wars universe, having penned Kylo’s transformation in ‘The Rise of Kylo Ren’ in 2020 – is now delving into the story following ‘The Last Jedi’. This new venture involves examining Kylo’s initial steps as the Supreme Leader. Soule expresses that Kylo, a character who has undergone significant change within a brief period, is grappling with trauma, power, and the consequences of his decisions while simultaneously trying to convince himself he’s in command.
The story begins as Kylo Ren embarks on a journey to Mustafar, aiming to tackle the heritage left by his grandfather, Darth Vader. Despite asserting that he intends to eliminate his past, writer Soule hints at deeper motives. “Kylo isn’t truthful with himself,” Soule clarifies. “Though he professes a desire to obliterate his past, there’s another part of him yearning for direction.” This internal struggle between good and evil is a key aspect of Star Wars, portraying Kylo Ren as both self-assured and bewildered.
Beyond being a solitary adventure, it’s also filled with political turmoil within the First Order. Characters like General Hux, Allegiant General Pryde, and others known to us, will contest Kylo Ren’s authority. This struggle for power foreshadows the internal conflict that eventually culminates in the emergence of the Final Order in The Rise of Skywalker.
Fundamentally speaking, “Legacy of Vader” explores the concept of identity. It delves into who Ben Solo truly is behind the mask, examining the forces that propel him – anger, ambition, or perhaps the faint glimmer of salvation through redemption.
Star Wars: Legacy of Vader #1 is set to release on February 5, 2025.
