Upcoming Marvel movie now expected to flop at the box office

As a lifelong Marvel fan who has witnessed the rise and fall of various superhero franchises, I can’t help but feel a sense of melancholy when I hear about the impending flop of “Kraven the Hunter.” Sony’s Spider-Verse has been a rollercoaster ride, with its highs (Venom) and its lows (Morbius).

If you introduce a Marvel character into a film, it’s almost certain that you’ll have a hit at the box office. In fact, five years ago, such a move would have been almost guaranteed for box-office success. However, in recent times, there has been a significant change within the industry. Nowadays, audiences don’t only react to films based on their genre or franchise; they react to them depending on their personal interest.

In many instances, it’s been the case that certain characters struggle to headline successful superhero films, like Supergirl in the ’80s and Steel in the ’90s. Nowadays, this issue has become more pronounced because every studio is eager to build franchises around lesser-known superheroes. Unfortunately, even well-established characters often fail to produce quality movies as well.

Despite the mighty Marvel Studios experiencing some setbacks lately, such as two movies failing to meet expectations at the box office and another being an outright failure, it underscores just how crucial it is to hit the mark nowadays.

Unfortunately for this movie based on a Marvel character, the trend is working against it.

Kraven the Hunter now expected to flop at the box office

The anticipated Sony Marvel film, “Kraven the Hunter,” is now forecasted to bring in only around $13 million to $15 million during its opening weekend in U.S. cinemas. This figure represents a substantial drop from earlier predictions, which suggested the movie could earn between $20 – $25 million. While these figures may have initially appeared reasonable for an average film, they become less promising when considering that “Kraven” has a production budget of over $100 million ($130 million to be precise). Unfortunately, this doesn’t bode well at all.

Indeed, the movie “Morbius,” which is Sony’s Spider-Verse franchise’s most infamous release, managed to pull in a significant opening weekend haul of $39 million in 2022. However, despite this strong start, the film ultimately failed to meet expectations, earning just $167 million against a budget that was much lower than “Kraven’s.” Since Sony’s film series has faced criticism, the poor reception of “Morbius” may have negatively impacted its success. A more favorable response to “Kraven the Hunter” could potentially help, but it might not be enough to compensate for the ground that needs to be made up.

Upcoming Marvel movie now expected to flop at the box office

As a gamer, I’ve got to say, it looks like the movie starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson might not do as well as expected, even rivaling the opening performance of Madame Web, which wasn’t exactly a box office hit with a $15 million start. Frankly, Madame Web was one of this year’s biggest disappointments, and it had a much smaller budget than Kraven, yet it still bombed. So, that’s not exactly encouraging news for the upcoming film.

It’s no wonder that this week brought news from TheWrap about the Sony Pictures Spider-Man Universe supposedly wrapping up, with no imminent plans for sequels. So far, only the Venom trilogy has managed to find success, but even those films have been panned by critics for their confused storylines. Each film in the series has underperformed compared to its predecessor.

Initial responses towards “Kraven” have been varied, with many applauding the thrilling action sequences and Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s portrayal of the brooding antihero. However, similar issues as before are being raised concerning the script, special effects, and rhythm. It remains to be seen how general audiences will react, but considering the seeming indifference towards a Kraven the Hunter film in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, the movie may face a tough time at the box office.

I’m genuinely disappointed that we might miss out on what could have been an extraordinary Kraven the Hunter movie starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Unfortunately, it seems like the franchise’s reputation and the general lack of enthusiasm for multiple Spider-Man villain films have conspired against it. If only ‘Kraven’ had come first, perhaps this story would have unfolded differently.

Kraven the Hunter is released in movie theaters on December 13, 2024.
