Untamed Netflix Confirms What Truly Happened to Sean Sanderson – And It’s a Major Twist

Netflix’s series Untamed sheds light on the actual events surrounding Sean Sanderson’s case, and it’s both heartbreaking and sadly predictable. The story revolves around Kyle Turner (Eric Bana), a detective with the National Park Investigative Services Branch, who is assigned to probe the death of an unidentified woman found within Yosemite National Park. Throughout the investigation, there’s frequent mention of Sean Sanderson, another missing individual whose case seems inextricably linked to this mystery.

Consequently, Episode 3 of Untamed disclosed that Sanderson’s family is planning to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the park due to his unexplained absence. Yet, the enigma surrounding Sanderson’s disappearance runs much deeper and is intricately linked with Kyle and his late son, Caleb.

The movie ‘Untamed’ boasts a high-profile ensemble headed by Eric Bana, Sam Neill, Rosemarie DeWitt, Wilson Bethel, who will reappear as Bullseye in the second season of ‘Daredevil: Born Again’. Lily Santiago is also part of the cast. The film made its debut on Netflix on July 17, 2025.

What Happened to Sean Sanderson In Untamed?

In Episode 6 of Untamed, we got a glimpse behind the scenes to uncover Sean Sanderson’s true identity as the murderer of Kyle Turner’s son, Caleb. Sean, a park benefactor and established businessman, harbors a sinister past that led him to brutally abuse and ultimately take the life of Caleb, who had been lost from a children’s group six years prior.

In the course of reading “Untamed,” it’s evident that I’ve been struggling to move past my son’s passing, a fact that viewers may notice in my frequent conversations with Caleb when I’m alone. The death of Caleb was the significant factor that led to my divorce from my ex-wife, Jill.

The final scene showed that Caleb’s demise deeply affected Jill, as she’s the child’s mother (which was understandable). In response, she took decisive action by enlisting Shane Maguire, a wildlife officer at Yosemite Park and an acquaintance of Kyle, to eliminate Sean Sanderson.

In a heartfelt chat, as if sharing secrets over popcorn, I’d say that in the gripping tale of “Untamed,” executive producer Mark L. Smith reveals an intriguing twist: Jill’s decision to hire Maguire to eliminate Sanderson was the catalyst that ultimately drove a wedge between her and Kyle.

What truly caused their separation was her decision to have Maguire perform this action secretly from Turner.

Although Jill sought revenge for her son’s demise, Kyle opted for a far more compassionate approach by pursuing lawful methods to imprison Sanderson. Regrettably, it had already passed the point of no return.

In Untamed Episode 5, Jill ended up being hospitalized due to a failed suicide attempt, which occurred after fearing that an investigation following Sanderson’s family’s lawsuit might implicate her.

Ultimately, Kyle uncovered the truth and had a physical altercation with Maguire, resulting in his temporary leave from work. Overwhelmed by grief, he took out his anger towards Maguire, who he felt should have been held responsible for failing to safeguard his child.

Did Kyle Ever Forgive Sean Sanderson?

During his suspension, Kyle Turner found himself with ample time for introspection, pondering over his sorrow, the choices made by his former spouse, and eventually, the deplorable acts committed by Sean Sanderson towards Caleb.

In the finale of “Untamed”, it was disclosed that Kyle made the choice to depart from the National Park, relinquishing all connections (including people) to begin anew somewhere else.

He bid farewell to his sorrow associated with Caleb’s demise, and chose to part ways with the grim recollection of that event.

Or more informally:
He said goodbye to his sadness over Caleb passing, and decided to move on from the dark memory of it.

After learning the truth about his son and the identity of his murderer, Kyle has finally achieved inner peace and resolution. Now, he can advance in life, keeping a part of Caleb within him as he journeys to new destinations.
